Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: Noisy alternator
« on: 07 April 2010, 16:19:06 »
S'funny my alernator bearing went within weeks, after cambelt, drive belt etc replaced.
Sounds a bit like a supercharger at the mo'  :)
I suspect new drivebelt just puts a bit more tension on the alternator bearing.
On the ever excellent advice on this forum i now have 2x bearings and a puller to do the job when the weather gets a bit warmer. total cost about a tenner including puller.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: Double DIN black facia

No, and you wouldn't want to go double din either....[/quote]

Why?? The unit I want is a panasonic valve unit to match my valve power amp. Only comes in double din. Will have to wait until I change car to facelift miggy (or Skoda Superb-which is the nearest thing to a miggy replacement i've had)

Having finally diagnosed the bearing noise on my '99 2.5v6 CDX miggy, as coming from the shot alternator bearings.
I am not sure what to get as there are 70 amp, 100 amp and 120 amp versions. Guess with all the kit on board I need a higher rated one but not sure which rating?

Why not just change the bearings?  ::)  http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1153772945
Even decent make bearings are cheap.  :y  :y  ;)

Thanks didn't think of that - SKF look good not the cheapest but still under a tenner for both.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: 12V supply to boot
« on: 18 January 2010, 23:08:38 »
Thanks again, forgot about the remote supply from the stereo.
I want to fit a 300W Inverter to power a mains powered amp (100w max at 240Vac not power output lol).
Already tested the setup and will work fine.
Thats why I need a relay inserted in the supply from the battery as it needs to be a bit hefty current wise.
Also I must be able to independantly switch in on and off from the front of the car in case it blows up  ;D

If you are after advise for a suitable source of power and whether relays are required, then it may be prudent to include details of what you are trying to do, so that we can assist with the information that you seek.

"Ongoing project" is insufficient to base an answer on

 :-/

I was trying to be polite. Surely the relay is not important, whether it is 5, 10 or 30 amps, it only needs the same 12v low current supply to operate. I have the wire of high enough current for my requirements from a fused supply already from the battery to the rear compartment.
I just needed to know the best way to get a independantly switched 12v supply to the boot, and assessed that if I have the wiring in place for the blind, could use a switch on the dash and relevent supply in the boot.
But, trying to find which wires is tricky without color codes as "Paynes" manual is useless.
thanks

relay is for a ongoing project.
I just need a 12v supply to switch it and thought the rear blind circuit would be an easy way to  get a switch at the front and 12v at the rear without having to lay in more wires.
I dont know which color and where wires are.?

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / 12V supply to boot
« on: 15 January 2010, 21:25:46 »
I need to utilise a 12v supply to operate a relay in the boot, from the dashboard area.
I was thinking could I fit the rear blind switch from a scrapper and use the leads off that? Do I have to fit a supplementary relay in the fusebox? And what leads am I looking for in the boot?

Many thanx
Stef

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Speakers - again....
« on: 01 January 2010, 11:37:40 »
Have seen some Infinity Kappas on offer.
There is a pair of 50.5CS 5 1/2 inch units at a tenner and a pair of 693.5 6x9's at twenty. Appear unused.
From my Hifi perspective Infinity were always well regarded.
These do seem a good buy.
I was thinking 6x9s in rear shelf.
Will the 5 1/2 fit in the front doors?
Any comments appreciated

Just as a tip.
I turn the ignition on, but before starting I cycle the selector lever between park and 1st a couple of times. It seems to clear the problem for a while.
Bu66ered if after doing rocker gaskets and cambelt I am getting underneath the car this side of chrimbo  ;D

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: LED - Fail!
« on: 11 October 2009, 13:33:05 »
Said this before but Blue is the worst color for Dash lighting. VW should never have gone this way.
Because of the wavelength of the blue light the eyes are slower to refocus from near to far-read not safe!.
Why do you think nearly every other car manufacturere over all these years has only ever used white, green or orange/red.
Personally I would want to fit Leds but would go "Ice White", so the Dash wouldn't look as dingy as the dull lighting miggys have currently.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: DAB Radio

Does the Highway have a phono output or are you restricted to using the FM modulator?

I spent yesterday salvaging the Blaupunkt DAB53 from my 1994 Omega & reinstalling the VDO system I fitted when I first bought the car.  I traded in the 1994 for a 2003 facelift Omega with a Bose system today. After a traumatic day yesterday I am not in a hurry to re install the Blaupunkt & the Highway looks like a cheap way of getting DAB to tide me over.

Highway has 3.5mm stereo jack. But if used with earphones - it uses the earphone lead as an aerial - I am fairly sure this disables the external aerial input.  >:(  (I wanted to use a separate FM modulator).
I will check tomorrow.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: DAB Radio
« on: 15 August 2009, 18:35:31 »
MM obviously getting into a DAB vs FM etc.
I had Revox B261 FM reference tuner with an amplified 7 element FM antenna on a roof pole. This was to get Jazz FM at the time from London. In Northampton that put me way outside normal area for reception, so mostly mono, stereo with a bit of hiss on a good day. Then it changed to Smooth FM and they lowered the output.

I now have a Marantz st7001 (Denon clone) Also had a Sony 777ES which was a tad better but unit color was yuk.
While absolute sound quality is not as good on Dab, it is hiss free. External Dab antenna. Brilliant.
And Planet rock as well as Jazz fm. Never listened to so much radio.

Which brings me to the point. It isn't the medium, its about the music. If these stations weren't on Dab I would suffer listening via the satellite receiver, now that is carp.

And the Pure Highway I cant really fault, even with its built in FM transmitter. Just "tune" the amp and speakers to match.
