I had to take radio out today to check the wiring behind as the sparks thought the fault with my dash lights not working might be there but in doing it the connector for aerial that plugs into the head unit broke, I tried to repair it but the inner signal core is so damn thin that all i did was make it worse I have read that there is a connector in the foot well but i've read 2 conflicting posts one here and one on VxON as to which footwell it is actually in.

Can someone confirm which side it is on (and if there even is a connector there), what type of connector it is and whether i can pick up a replacement cable from the likes of halfords etc

It is a bit confusing - definitely driver's side footwell in a facelift, but pre and mini seem to always talk about the connection being in the passenger's side.
You won't get a replacement cable in Halfords (it has a connector wrapped in a big, grey plastic plug thingy), but can't cost much from dealer - you could always cut this off and make a lead using an in line socket. I did this for mine, but then my plug had completely melted off anyway.

Passenger side on mine 98 CDX but thats a saloon , the cable tends to become very brittle due to heat in the area .
 Not sure if you will be able to get just the conector  . I managed to get the old connector apart and used a new peice of cable down to the foot well , but  I cant remember what i did that end sorry

  errrm, can anyone tell me what type of screw holds the kick panel on? I'm not as supple as I used to be and can't get down there to see, it doesn't appear to be a normal cross-head type screw at least my screw driver doesn't seem to fit it

It is a small torx, not sure what size.

I have a cheap (Wickes) 1/4" drive screwdriver set and I use that for all sorts of trim fixings but didn't take note of the size.

Ratty its a Torx type 
You will need to take the part of or the door sill the bit with the vuaxhall badge on there are three or four screws under there which you will also need to remove this will allow the trim to lift up .
When you have done this there is another screw holding the kick panel down which will need to come out ,hope that makes sense

Makes perfect sense, It's a Vauxhall, I think they try and make you remove the engine just to empty the ashtray

There are two screws, one is hidden under the plastic cover that runs under the doors.

To get to that one I had to raise the seat high enough to wrestle the trim off the seat runner, pop out the plastic strips that cover the screws, undo screws & then fight with the seatbelt to let me lift the plastic cover off.

No problem  It is actually easier than it sounds the only one that is a pain is the one you were asking about when you try to put it back together I found its best to get it in the hole in the plastic so its just held in otherwise its a pain in the bottom getting it back in .
 If you dont have torx drivers it may be worth investing in some they are used a fair bit on Vauxhalls

Omega aerial plug, on my pre facelift is an ISO type 11mm, bought one from ebay to replace when had a similar problem.
