Slight engine wobble at idle
« on: 16 February 2007, 10:28:39 »

Hello,

Another quick one.

Finished the crank breather clean and rebuild lsat night.  Prior to doing the job there was a constant wobble from the engine at idle.  I thought it was because the breathers were blocked but it is still there albeit much less than before.  Once the engine speed goes above 1000 it goes away.

I'm thinking sparkplugs or engine mount....... ideas?

Yes revs are steady at idle.  I also have the engine fault light come on which was after the MOT (passed - yippie!!)

Air leak? From where? The inlet manifold?

What sort of car is it?

May I suggest you update your profile, as it would help some of the members to diagnose your car more easily.

I have updated my profile now.  I drive a P reg omega cdx 2.5 v6.  It drives perfectly fine despite the ecu light.  There is no rev limit loss of power nothing..... strange!!!

Not sure what this might be, but if no power loss at high rev then I think it is unlikely to be HT leads, plugs, injectors, fuel filter, etc – these would have also showed under full power IMO.

Engine mounts – when braking hard or accelerating – do you feel any movement in the gear stick? Do you hear a 'knock' from the engine bay or the underside? TBH I never experienced it on an Omega so not sure if it applicable to heavier RWD cars with longitudal engines, but it is sure sign of engine/gear mounts wear on smaller FWD cars e.g. Astra, Escort, etc.

on my old omega which had leaking cam cover gaskets (and oil-submerged spark plugs!) I think it cooked the HT leads. The car seemed to drive fine, the only thing that really brought my attention to it was the idle. The speed was OK but it kept dipping, as if it was misfiring - but appeared to be fine when accelerating. I had the cam covers, gaskets & HT leads replaced and it cured it ...

Just done the paperclip test and got codes 14 and 41 - coolant temp sensor voltage low and then either vehicle speed sensor voltage low/EST Line coil cylinder 2&3 High voltage ......

HT leads sounds like a good one, anyway of testing these? resistance, ohms?

Looking at where the collant temp sensor is it would seem that something must have happened during the breather cleanout... :(

looks like im taking off the inlet manifold.... again pfffft

you can get coolant temp sensor wire back on without removing too much, but tbh, its easier to whip plenum off...

41 is a gearbox fault, first gear position switch low voltage.

Are you sure about the 41? TIS doesn't list a 41 code for Motronic 2.8.1 - you didn't misread the 14 as 41?

Sorry just got back off exercise, am a bit tired but sat having as beer...... [smiley=beer.gif]  nice!!

Nope, definite pause between the 14 and 41.  Can post a link to a video if one would check my diagnosis.....
