Low Mileage Record - Thanks COVID19!
« on: 24 January 2021, 14:06:22 »

Just done my annual oil and filter change, plus other servicing.

All done after a mileage of just 1634 since the last change 1 year ago.  Never done so little mileage in my motoring life to date; thanks COVID!

Well, Sainsbury's is not far away in Ashford and I have been isolating :D :D :D 8)

Oh well, I wonder if I can get a refund on my insurance and road excise duty?!!! ::) ::) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)

The miggy has it's MOT Wednesday, so it bloody well better pass!! ;D ;D

Thanks Dave and cam.in.head, I am keeping my fingers crossed! :D

Gave it a blow on the M20 after the oil change and will be doing it twice before Wednesday :y :y :y

No doubt there will be many cars going through the test this year that have done next to no mileage.  I was hoping that they would postpone the tests again, but obviously they have not! ::) ::)

I put my sister's Coupe in on Friday, as its extension is nearly up - 2000 miles in 18 months. I've since replaced the number plate and blown bulb, and will free-off the NSR brake caliper(again >:( ) tomorrow.

Mileage on the C**o hasnt dropped at all, as I mostly use it for work, but the Omega has dropped from around 4000 to just under 3000.
Had to refit a couple of towbar bolts to keep him happy, but other than that just got an advisory on front tyres which have now been replaced.
Omega mileage will drop a bit more now though as its not getting used to take swmbo to Sainsburys or visiting family.
Im now using it for work once a week to give it a bit of a run.

Mine was 23K this year between MOT's but the MOT's were 17 months apart, would have been around 39K normally in that timeframe so down a fair bit due to COVID.

My Omega hasn't turned a wheel in over a year and has done about 6,000 miles in the 8 yrs or so I've owned it,only kept it for sentimental reasons otherwise I'd have got rid of it years ago.

Battlebus is due an MOT.  That might not be that high a mileage in the last year.

It has saved me a massive amount in fuel, but cost me a new battery :o :o :o ::)

Oh well, I wonder if I can get a refund on my insurance and road excise duty?!!! ::) ::) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)

The miggy has it's MOT Wednesday, so it bloody well better pass!! ;D ;D

Direct Line have already given me money back ... twice !!  They contacted me last mid-summer and asked for a photo of the mileage... gave me £25 back ...  then in November asked for another .. another £25 back ..... and have already told me that at renewal they will be asking for a nother photo ..... don't know what the result will be ....... but hopeful..  :)

Blimey, that is good! :y :y

With the AA today when renewing my insurance I checked if there was any difference if my mileage changed from 5k per year down to 2k, but they said no difference before reducing the new price by £80. :D ;)

That's all well and good, but what happens when your mileage returns to normal to previous levels?

It makes no difference to my annual cost when I get back to 5k max. ;)

It allows me to berate my boss over the misery 28p a mile they give me, as I can conclusively prove that no car I own can be run for 28p per mile.

Not that he gives a toss, obviously, but I get that warm feeling....

Missus won't claim mileage, on principle, she reckons she gets paid enough for what she does without taking more money from the academy trust. But.........she could claim 37ppm.

We get the full 45ppm, but don't do a huge amount of work mileage in our own vehicles. It does make it worth the trip to Luton/Mancchester when required though  8)

I was getting 45ppm 20 years ago for occasional use. My Cortina cost 12ppm(total costs worked out after I sold it) and the Capri was slightly cheaper to run, so I made a decent profit on trips to Norwich. Especially as we were told that we had to claim from the depot, not from home. So that was 90 miles I didn't do, and were all profit :y

Blimey, that is poor! :o :o

For my police work I get 45p per mile.

Mind you I once enjoyed thousands of miles without cost: a free brand new quality company car and no tax penalty or costs. Oh, those were the days long gone! :'( :'( :D

HMRC allow 45ppm upto a max of 10k miles. Presumably if you are home based the actual amount might well be dependant on the tax rate.

We get the full 45ppm, but don't do a huge amount of work mileage in our own vehicles. It does make it worth the trip to Luton/Mancchester when required though  8)
I used to with my previous place, but with this bunch of tightwads, just 28p.  However, I am allowed to claim tax relief on the tax I paid on the remaining 17p (so around 3-6p, depending on if we are basic or higher rate tax payers).  How generous they are.

Either way, I lose money, so I keep all the data, so I can use it as ammo as and when required.

Not that they like us using private cars, and prefer us to hire them instead, but I aint doing that in the current climate. Its bad enough I have to go to the sites of the great unwashed as it is, without getting into a crap hire car that has been through a carwash and classed as meticulously sterilised.

Calm down, lad. Sounds to me like you're having mental health problems.  ;D

Yes, maybe I should have a "mental health day" that seems all the rage at our place now, particularly when you have run out of leave...

When I did those trips to head office I was offered a hire car. But as I would have had to arrange it and its return, deal with all the resulting paperwork, plus pay and claim for any fuel used it wasn't worth the hassle to me. I also found the £115 profit of using my own car useful :y

Not withstanding the sort of shite I get from the hire company are utter crap like Hyundai i40 or Nissan Joke.

But it costs me money to use my nice comfy cars.  So makes it a difficult choice before this sniffle thing came along...

The i40 is a pretty decent car. As appliances go :y

You are very strange.  They are god awful heaps of junk.  They don't go, they don't stop well, they don't do corners, but worse of all, they are horrible sprung to make them a spine killer. And the seats are shite.

There is absolutely nothing to like about them.

I tend to ask for Fifi/Corsa class now instead, just to avoid the i40, seeing as Enterprise seem to have bought millions of the bloody things.  Imagine my heart sink when they deliver one, proudly proclaiming I've been "upgraded"  >:(

I took an i40 to Orkney and back, and whilst it obviously wasn't my first choice of car, it did so with zero fuss or effort and did about 1,800 miles on less than three tanks of diseasal. The only thing that broke was a rear seat belt buckle and clasp... And that was thanks to a week with a one year old puppy rather than any fault of the car  :D

If I didn't have a penchant for Mercs, it would be on my list of appliances long before a VAG product.

I'd happily have one too.

I've driven a couple, and can't remember anything about them. Which is a good thing because it means there was absolutely nothing that was annoying, uncomfortable or didn't work in an unintuitive way. Of course it also means there was nothing exciting about them, but a car like that is a tool for getting up to four people from A to B in an efficient way.

It's one of the things I liked about the Omega compared to its competitors; that it went about the business of being a car without any pretentious or pretend design/sportiness/image.

Trying to make that sort of car meet media roadtester's requirements of being exciting to drive and look at is what led to the mk1 Focus, which did that by being an awful thing to look at, use, drive or be driven in.
