Help please....
« on: 27 January 2008, 18:20:38 »

so today me nd dad went to get the 2.5 TD estate , select, from nottingham which we got off ebay for 430 quid

living bout 100 miles journey gave chnce to discover a few problems

1) When idling, or traveling very slowly the exhaust seems to rattle, or make a vibrating noise?  any idea what this could be/how to fix it?

2) when dad was parking i got out and heard some squaking noises. Not this nasty ones you sometimes here from diesel, more like brakes but he said the drive didnt feel like bad brakes

3) Steering is aparantly quite heavy. Weve checked the power steering and there is fluid in it. Might be a matter of getting used to it thouch since this is replacing a much more newer, smaller and lighter car. (crappy Kia Shuma)

4) No windscreen wash getting to screen, the pipes had come out of the plastic things on the bonnet, we put them back. Them filled up the tank to discover it was leaking. After taking the grill off aparantly theres a leak/pipe loose where the water entry tube meets the servo? or something like that?   ill update this problem when dad gets up so i can ask

5) Rear fog light appears to be on constantly. We tried switching it off but without any effect. Possibly the button mechanism?

6) Some spots of rust. Will this spread? they are at bottom of doors, where door meets window, and a little at the front of the bonnet. Very small sections but how could this be stopped?

7) gearstick gaiter is worn through to the cloth. Same with the handbreak cover. Can theese be replaced?? at what cost? is the job dificult

8) It has the standard cassette player with the radio stations displayed on the screen. We wanna put the brilliant sony one from our old car in. Will the radio work? does it have to be linked to the screen?

i think thats it but in all probability ill remember something else in a minute. Please bear in mind that this is a 1994 car with over 200,000 miles so yeah quite pleased with the condition inside really.
Any help appreciated and yeah i know there are alot of diferent problems here. Cheers.

EDIT: I just remembered something else

The front passenger door is really dificult to open from the outside. Needs a good pull at the handle to get it to budge.
Opening from inside is a little jolty
Drivers door is quite jolty opening and closing.
Drivers side read door opening from outside is a little stiff but not to bad
have sprayed wd40 on al hinges to no effect.

and something else i forgot:
They sellers gave us a new air filter. Should this be fitted now or what? is it a dificult job

its fairly obvious im a total noob lol

1) Either baffle plates loose inside the silencer, (Replace silencer),
or worn exhaust mountings or Engine/ Gearbox mounts that allows
the exhaust to rattle against a fixed part of the car. Get down and
dirty and check whilst engine is idling. Check for excessive movement
in the engine and gearbox mounts and check for condition and
    security.

2)Check for wear in suspension and condition of handbrake shoes
   within the rear disc hubs.

3)Check tyre pressures before fault finding the steering.

4)Repair/Replace loose pipe.

5)Possible light switch failure wiring fault giving crossed feed.
   Check circuits with multimeter.

6)Rust can be expected on this age of car. If untreated will spread
   and perforate the bodywork.

7)Replace with items from scrapyard.

8) No idea. ICE isn't my thing.

Regarding stiff noisy doors. Check out this link.

With regards the air filter. Give the whole car a service so you
know where you're at. You don't know the standard or frequency
of any previous servicing. (stamped up service book means nowt
in my eyes.)

Hope all that helps.  ;)
