2.0 cam cover gasket
« on: 19 August 2008, 16:32:11 »

hi guys
just about to change the gasket, ive read the guide on here and just have a quick question. is sealant needed ? its says to use in the OOF guide but my mate from VX says they never use it. he's been on the spanners there 20 years or so and has done plenty.
i only want to do it once so need it done right 1st time ?
so sealant or not ?

It pays to apply a little black sealent where the half moon part of the gasket is.
Its a belt and braces sort of thing.

Rule of thumb says where the gasket bends down at 90 degrees apply a little sealent.

Hope this helps

If your mate has been on the spanners for 20 years with vauxhall then he should know that he should use it, typical fitter not doing the job properly, thats why they leak after a short period of time.

Most oil leaks are a result of blocked breathers which cause the gasket to fail, so when the lids off, clean them all out and check the pipes coming off the lid, it is not unknown for them to be filled and blocked with black spongy sludge !

yeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaa all done !!
engine management light came on last night while taking my daughter home so thought id better get it done...
all the breathers were blocked with oily crud, the fat rear pipe that fastens on to the metal pipe disintergrated when i took it off. 5 pound summat from VX the robbing bastards..but i needed it sharpish. also cleaned idle control valve and throttle body while i was at it.
started up 1st crack and run lovely. no lumpy tickover or missing like it was doing until it warmed up.
next........ coolant loss.. do the hbv's go on the 2.0 ? is this my 1st port of call ? oh and where is it ?

cheers

Ask him this.

Does he consider him self to know more than the highly qualified specialists who designed the engine and considered the added production cost on 100's of thousands of units to be neccassary?

Not had to do my gasket yet, but when I do, with ref to the
sealant, I will probably use the sealant I've been using for the
past 20 years. I used to use it when rebuilding Rolls Royce Jet
Engines.

Hylomar Blue:

http://www.hylomar.us/universal_blue.shtml

It's fuel/oil resistant. Non setting, so it moves with the expansion/
contraction cycles of the mating surfaces thereby maintaining
the seal. Doesn't harden/crack. Effective up to 250 degrees
Centigrade.

I've always used a smear on my sump plug when doing an oil change.
Never had a leaking or seized sump plug in all the time I've used it.

Not saying that GM sealants are worse. They be even better for all
I know, being specifically designed for their applications. But I tend
to trust what I've used and know to work from experience.
