winter worries
« on: 02 October 2010, 20:53:18 »

Hello,
just read that we might be in for another winter like last year  :( which then led me to wonder what a 30l v6 rear wheel drive estate is like in the slippy stuff because last time I drove a rear wheeled car 20 odd years ago it wasn't that good.....
I have a feeling I already know the answer having had the back end out in just a bit of rain.
cheers Neil

imo winter tires like this one

will solve your problem
or this

however studded tires will be necessary only for very harsh conditions like  steep hills with ice..

and you can use them below 15 celcius even in dry..

price ranges are same as performance tires but not cheapo like budget tires.. the cheapest I can recommend is kumho winter tire.. goodyears , bridgestones and continentals are very good but more pricey.. but dont know their exact prices for this season as I'm a bit away :-/

as miggy is rwd I'm afraid you need to purchase 4..  :(

and dont go for wide models above 205.. no need..

I found that just normal road tyres handled the snow very well last year...  Just make sure that you have suitable tyre tread depth on all the tyres and you should be fine, so long as you take into account the variables that snow creates...

Unless you live in areas where you have high levels of snow with untreated roads for more than a few days, I wouldn't worry about the dedicated snow tyres...

winter tires compound are designed to stay soft even below 7 celcius where as normal summer tires loose grip even without snow.. :-/

GET SOME WEIGHT IN THE BOOT.

And set the tyre pressures correctly.

No issues then TBH

thats great thanks very much, got budget tyres on the rears at the moment (times are hard) and the back end steps out very easy in the rain, need to save some penny's me thinks.
thanks again for the info.

Full tank of petrol and 5 scrap car batteries in the boot (plus the usual crap), and I was still struggling for grip at times on the flat!

Sadly if we get severe snow the councel tend to get caught out these days as they dont seem to pre grit amy more so will more likely get caught out in catch up griiting after the snow has fallen and the roads are full.

If I get chance I would like a set of chunkier tread /block pattern if they are are road tyres for all year use as the mormal tyoe are more perfornced and rain related these days.  Having had to drive in 4 to 8 inches of snow in the 70/80's I personally would'nt want to be out in my car on it's current tryres in any form of snow.

This is one of my front, the grooves round the radious might help with the snow a little bit in a straight line but not much and no use at all for traction on the rears IMHO
