Title: Splitting Engine and Auto box (Out of car)
Post by: GrahamK on 10 June 2021, 14:45:52
I'm planning on splitting an Omega V6 engine and gearbox this weekend and despite reading the manual I'm not sure if I can split them without removing the bolts connecting the torque convertor to the flywheel. It looks as if I can, as the Torque convertor does not seem attached to the gearbox directly. Once apart I plan to remove the TC. Have I got this right?
Regards,

Graham.

It's possible to pull the gearbox off the torque convertor. But you have to pull it straight back a considerable distance to avoid damaging either. The gearbox is heavy, and difficult to hold.

What do you think will be difficult about unbolting the convertor from the flex plate?

I think you can get to the TC bolts if you remove the starter motor, best to remove box and TC as one item I think

Hi,

Assembly is out of the car already thankfully.

My concern is getting to the bolts from underneath. I imagine I'll have to lift it using the crane and I'm worried about dropping it on my head!

However, the point really is that I don't want to risk damaging it. As you say both engine and gearbox are fairly heavy and unwieldy. I think I will remove the gearbox and TC as one unit.
Looking at the manual, there appears to be an access door to get at the bolts and another hole to stick a screwdriver in to stop the plate revolving when your undoing the bolts. Not sure if the Starter is in the way, but when I get out to it i should be able to work it out.

Regards,

Graham.

There is a cutout in the aluminum of the sump covered by a large plastic bung - probably 3 inches by 2 inches. If you pull the bung out you can see the flexiplate and get to the bolts.

You'll probably have to lift it all off the ground to do it, but some axle stands and/or car ramps to rest it on whilst you work on it should reduce the risk of it falling on your head. The bolts aren't that tight - I didn't have to counter-hold it.

Oh - and there is always more oil in the gearbox and engine. Even when you think you've drained it all there is another pint somewhere waiting to p155 on you.

Thanks for all of the replies.

Outside work planned for the weekend, no rain forecast, who'd have believed it?

I would roll the engine and gearbox over far enough to get to the TC bolts from underneath. The dipstick has o-rings to stop it leaking so roll it that way (passenger side) not the other way else you will have sump oil pouring out of the breather box.

An update from very sunny Shropshire.

So much easier than I expected. Engine and box was on a pallet and I had access to get a socket on to the bolts without moving it an inch. Dumb luck works in your favour just once in a while. Bit of a fiddle getting the bolts lined up as they seem to be in a place you can get a socket on for only a very few degrees of rotation. I only needed to go around twice, so not too bad really.

Cheers,

Graham.
