how to fix exhaust leak?
« on: 05 September 2015, 08:33:27 »

I have a big exhaust leak between the cat pipe and the manifold on the left side, not long back I changed the gasket, but soon after it started leaking again.
Should I try fitting a new gasket, and use exhaust paste? (didn't try exhaust paste last time)

Exhaust paste isn't good practice...

I would suggest that either the gasket was damaged/poor quality or something is loose... Not a common place for a leak.

To add... The loose thing could well be engine mounting over exhaust... If the engine is rocking too much it can cause problems.

Remove downpipe, clean both surfaces, apply a smear of silicone to both sides or gasket, refit using new, m10 nuts and spring washers,  never leak again :y

Silicone can damage O2 sensors ;)

There shouldn't be a need to use any paste on the gasket between head and exhaust manifold. If it has been used in the past then traces of the old paste & gasket may cause a leak by preventing the manifold sitting flat on the head.

The usual cause of exhaust leaks on 4 cylinder Omegas is the flexi connection on the downpipe.
