Title: Austrian election result...
Post by: Doctor Gollum on 15 December 2017, 22:53:40
Remind me, where did Hitler come from?

Just asking...

The result doesn't indicate the rise of another Hitler. Its difficult to see how that could ever happen again, although we should never be conmplacent.
The result is another sign of the masses across the Western world kicking back against the political elite, who assume we are all brainless morons who will swallow the same lies over and over again.

Some of the comments on here are truly laughable. Pick any subject you like and people rush into comparisons from history and rabid conjecture. For goodness sake.......you really have no more idea what’s down the road than my dog does.

The only thing I really want to know from "down the road" is tonights lottery numbers. I would actually buy a ticket then.
Anything else can happen as and when it wants and we can deal with it, talk about it, argue about it when the time comes.

they don't assume that. We prove it every time there's an election. Or if there's a microphone in front of us.

Oh, sorry, you meant the original Hitler, not the new one (in LZ's eyes)

Apparently they're going to repeal the smoking ban in Austria so you'll be able to enjoy a fag with your stein!  :-\

Remember the days when your clothes would reek of fag smoke after a night out and had to go straight in the washing machine? Ugh!  ::)

TB, behave.  Just because you have a cull list doesn't make you the new Hitler! ::) ::) ::) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Seriously, I know all to much about that period of history for it ever to be treated as a joke.  At the moment I could never see this new Austrian upstart (Hitler WAS that!!) ever forming a new National Socialist German Workers' Party. The German people of today are in a very different position to those in the 1930's, and with what they know now would never want another Austrian fooling them as the other bastard did!

Teachers used to smoke with a class full of kids when I was young.

My old Doctor would sometimes have  'a fag on the go' if you made a visit.

Times change.

Yes, indeed, and one of my teachers was also often drunk and used to throw books at the children who got things wrong, like with me once! :o :o :o

We had one like that but he used to chuck the board rubber around!  ::)

He also used to get some of his favourite boys to visit him at his home!  :o  He was found dead in his flat a few years ago, apparently committed suicide.  :)

I can remember visiting my doctor many years ago, complaining that I couldn't sleep and asking him for some sleeping tablets...

His advice in a room thick with smoke as he had a ciggie on the go, was have a few drinks before you go to bed...far better than tablets  ::) ;D

I actually disagree, even though I'm not a smoker.

Its a dangerous slippery slope, and we've already got too far down to return.

Remember our old form master used to light up, open the classroom door and say wait. Did a small countdown and the end of lesson bell rang. There ya go he said, works every time. He was a very popular teacher with a wicked sense of humour. ;D ;D

I had one who was a very good shot with a bit of chalk. He ran out one lesson so asked for it back, which you can imagine was the wrong thing to say! :-X ::) ;D

When at school many years ago we had a science teacher who you could tell was "on the edge" when he felt his class was being disrupted his face would go red he would grit his teeth, shake and then hurl a half kilo weight with some force from his balance scales that sat on his desk towards the perpetrator of the class disruption :o, it was thought amusing by the class and the time but with hind site and age if had hit someone on the head the results could have been fatal I believe shortly after I left school he had a  breakdown and retired from teaching

I recall my history teacher - a chalk thrower to anyone talking in his lesson - threw an old fashioned board rubber to one of the lads right at the back, who was swinging on his chair chatting to lad next to me. Perfect shot, right on the bonce, knocked his clear off the chair, causing his to bang his head on the wall. Its unclear what caused him to lose consciousness, but the ambulance paramedics took him away for the rest of the day ;D

I'm guessing nowadays, there would be a claim.

Nobody else dared open their mouth for that lesson, so the deterrent worked :y

As an aside, I remember our Scottish chemistry teacher, lets call her Miss G to protect the innocent.  One lesson we'd been misbehaving like 15yr old boys do, and she when into a proper rant, something along the lines of "You lot think you're hard? My last school in Liverpool, they were hard. They hit the staff, they burnt down the classrooms, but at least they had respect". The last bit caused me to properly laugh loudly, at which point she burst into tears.

She didn't last long ;D

Our woodwork teacher always used to walk around with a 2' steel rule, which was firmly applied to the back of the misbehaviours head. He never had any class discipline problems. :y :y :y

Those WERE the days !! ;) :y
Discipline....never did me any harm. I hold (or held) no malice towards any of the teachers that walloped me, threw blackboard dusters at me, gave me detention, or indeed the local bobby, who clipped my ear a few times. No different to my parents who dished out the same treatment. Its a word long since deleted from the English dictionary called.......RESPECT !!!!!! :)

So.....we need to beat some respect into our kids then. If someone down the pub gives you a fickin good hiding, tell the police you don’t want to press charges, you actually respect him for it. A lot of people in authority in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s were no more than thugs and cowards, great at throwing their weight around with kids, but would scream like a girl if one of the parents gave them some of the same.
My kids respect me, and I’ve never laid a finger on any of them.

Yep we had a Metalwork teacher who used to drag miscreants into the store, give them a dead leg and then paddle their arses with a piece of flat metal that he called Excalibur!  ::)

If he'd done it occasionally to someone who genuinely deserved it then no problem, but he did it for fun and picked on someone every lesson.  >:(  I didn't respect him then and don't now. He was a ladies genitalia!  ::)

Well said STEMO! :y :y

It was not physical assault that made me grow up respecting law and order along with other people and their property, but living in a disciplined Royal Navy family we knew the difference between right and wrong.  That is how to bring up kids, and that is how I brought up mine without any trouble with the police or other authorities.

The teachers who assaulted kids in the past should be ashamed of themselves, as violence breeds violence;)

If he’d have done it to one of my kids, he’d have needed some metalwork in various parts of his body.

There does need to be a balance struck, but currently it is too namby pamby.

When our school gave up (mostly) physical forms of punishment, with the worse punishment being an hours detention after school, when you were allowed to do your homework anyway, you can imagine an all boys school of adolescent teenagers just went on the rampage.

Those teachers who did carry on with more physical punishment - and I'm not talking knocking the crap out of them - did have less unruly classes.  And I think society as a whole has mirrored that, esp with this no smacking bullshit.

The parents have a massive part to play in this as well.  But, as always, the do-gooding, put-them-on-the-naughty-step mongrels need to be culled first

I think such things were more about discipline[apart from the sadist type teachers]if you were told not to talk in class and did you soon found out that a blackboard rubber bouncing off your noggin hurt and were more likely to think twice before doing so/getting caught again.Respect to me you have to earn you cannot enforce it.

It was discipline through fear, and had nothing to do with respect.
