Title: knocking noise
Post by: Entwood on 30 March 2018, 19:57:03
The beast has developed a knocking noise, only noticeable from the front nearside wheel when at high lock / low speed ... ie when turning into a parking space or similar. Much less obvious when reversing. No sign of odd tyre wear or tram lining, noise is slightly repetitive, but not rapid ...

When it stops raining (if it ever does :( ) what should I be checking, please ??

Ta in advance  :)

I occasionally get this but it seems to be temperature depending!

Top mounts are worth a check :y

various things to check as many others will tell you but i would start with rocking the car sideways(by pushing the area above the front door with window down)to eliminate or show up any loose drop links which cannot always be felt when car is level.
then check the front suspension arm bushes havnt torn from the metal.rear. vertical one especially.
brake calipers can also rattle on the sliders.
other things like top mounts as james said, broken bits of spring sitting in lower seat and loose balljoints, lower or steering.
a few bits there to keep you busy !

Is it a regular knocking, once a wheel revolution? Does it follow a recent wheel change? If so, look for new balance weights.

An unbalanced wheel isn't noticeable at parking speeds    ;)

I've seen this with utterly shot wishbone bushes.  But most people notice the ill effects long before the noise.

Jack whole front up, look for play in that corner, particularly in wishbone bushes, ball joint, TREs, and drop links (you'll have to remove droplink to check for play in that). While the front is in the air, check for *any* vertical play in steering idler - there should be none at all.

Best way to check for play is a long pry bar.
