Well, nearly home and the old girl overheats close to 100oC after careful driving and parking up, I discover that the main fan ain't on, as it normally would be after shutting engine down - which seems pretty conclusive.
Coolant temp sensor new, some pipes changed, not lost any coolant, radiator less than a year old, HBV genuine and low mileage, all the usual suspects are 'fine', it has to be the fan, surely.
So, given Miss DBG isn't very keen on driving the car without a fan - has anyone got one? Obviously a couple of days time I can have from from ebay/similar, but we're ideally wanting something even quicker!
Can OOF help?? :'(

Have you tried spinning the fan manually[engine off of course]to see if it's seized?Other things that spring to mind fuse[presumably checked?] fan relay or radiator thermoswitch[es] Have you tried the fan test?
-
Cheers mate
was making a bit of a whiney noise a week or two ago
manually spins, fine
fuses checked (visually) though apparently on the list there is no cooling fan fuse for a 1996 car(!) older, yes, newer, yes. :o bizzarre!
Tried to deciper the fan test, don't understand electronic speak! Doesnt make any sense :D. I'm going to try and run two wires from the battery to the fan itself, just to physically check it is the fan for definite.

You do surprise me even I can follow the fan test procedure-and I'm a proper dummy :D-I find it easier with a second person to watch what the front fans are doing though.Speaking of which did not the front fans kick in if the temp got so high?
-
don't have front fans, dear ;D havent in a long time, they went the way of the air con condenser :) ie: in a hedge not far from Lincoln about 9 years ago.
-
Ah,that'd explain why they didn't kick in then ;D anyway good luck with sourcing replacement/sorting the issue :y

Well...went to try and make up a lead and i tried turning it again, and it just locked solid. Jammed, like a seized bearing. Gave it a push and it span fine, for maybe 1/4 a turn, then locked again. gave it some to-ing and fro-ing and it spins ok sometimes, but for barely a full turn, then jams. At first I thought there was something stuck, but I just think the bearing has pretty much died on it. If that's jammed at any point then the motor will just have burned out, surely?
Without checking relays and sensors etc, I think it's an open and shut case of knackered fan motor.
Squeaks like a mouse on Honeymoon when it does turn too. that's a baaad bearing!

If it had front fans fitted, they should be replaced. The wiring is different according to what is fitted and engine...
V6 with aircon/climate should have a total of three fans :y
-
Yep certainly sounds like the fan is fubar.Shame you're so far away now and all your car breaking contacts are up here or it might have been possible to sort summat out.
-
I know, I know one guy who will definitely have one, and another guy who probably does! One ten mins from where I used to live and the other fifiteen. I'll get looking on the interweb for a new one :y
-
I'm pretty sure i've got a couple of fans stashed in a corner somewhere if it helps ?
Not sure which one is which but if your coming up to these parts, feel free to give us a ring mate :y :)

Very kind of you, my good man! If they're visible the P/Ns I've found are
90502181 (original)
09466350
90510673
I think I've found a couple of brand new ones for not stupid money. Might be in the market for the frontmost fans, though, as i really need to source some of them. Keep you all updated.
