James, when you come to fit the new box to your car, unbolt the torque convertor and fit it to the new box before offering the whole lot up. Messrs McBurger & Laidback Autobox Fitters Ltd seem to strike lucky and get the splines and dogs to line up with the torque convertor still attached to the drive plate but I think fiddling with 6 lightweight torque convertor bolts is much easier than trying to persuade 14 ton of gearbox that it wants to engage with the splines whilst balanced on a trolley jack.

General Discussion Area / Matchless Project 2 - Update
« on: 04 May 2007, 13:20:02 »
Making progress again.
Ive had this car since September but keep finding other jobs to do which are more urgent.
Got it running in Dec and moved it from Marks drive to mine.
Used the Vax to clean the interior over Easter...most of the interior was tacky to touch, yeuch!!, the Vax had 2" of sludge in it just from the front seats. It has come up well and with a bit more work will look like new except the drivers seatbelt which is so dirty that its probably easier to change it.
Started on the wishbones, droplinks and front brakes last night, should get that done tonight then its on to the rear brakes and change the brown muck thats in the brake reservoir.
Hope to get some tyres fitted next week then its MoT time and test drive to see what else needs doing. The Elite estate is up for sale so I have to get the project finished soon or dust off the bicycle.

sure theres a how to for adjustment on here  :-/ but its fiddly and mine still isnt perfect either,,,
How to for service but doesn't cover adjustment.

Strip the rear brakes, deglaze the drum with emery paper, file 6 - 10 mm leading and trailing edges on the shoe friction material. Make sure that the operating levers pivot properly, they can seize up. Refit the drum.
Get underneath and drop one of the exhaust heatshields so you can see the handbrake cable adjuster.....loosen it right off.
Adjust the handbrake shoes through the hole in the drum until they just lock the drum, pull the handbrake lever hard a few times and bang the drum with a wooden mallet or bit of wood to help the shoes to centralise.
Now back off the shoe adjuster slightly untill the drum is free, dont over-do this but dont leave them binding either...the difference is only one notch.
Tighten the cable adjuster so the brakes are locked on the third click.
Replace heatshield etc.

On an auto, if you use the handbrake to control speed on the morning-reverse-off-the-drive then it will keep the shoes and drum face in good condition.

I hear Alton Towers have free entry today if you bring a dragon, however big or small.....
My Dragon is Scots, will they still accept her or is St George not fussy what nationality he gets on the end of his lance?

Lifters are the same across all V6 Ecotec engines of the same vintage.
There were some changes around 97/98 which is tied in with a different oil pump which required modified T vents, the lifters also changed to a different construction but that was for reliability, not oil pressure reasons.

When the cams are out you can clean and test the lifters following the guide on here.

Remember when assembling:-
Green sealant under the front cam bearing cap front edges, black sealant in the corners of the camcover seal path but take care to keep the sealant away from the drain holes in the front bearing caps.

Centre tie rods are often on ebay, or try Autovaux.

Can be difficult to split the ball joint tapers, normal splitters wont fit in so use the old fashioned technique of striking either side of the socket with a pair of hammers.

Not quite sure of access to that cut wire but it looks easily solderable to me. I would tidy up the hole in the rubber boot (ie make it bigger) then solder one end of a patch wire to the cut end, slide over some heatshrink then solder onto the other end.

Looks like it might be Polar Sea Blue in which case it should be written off, especially if the tailgate is in good nick. ;)

Problem with damage like that is the labour charge, on a new car it would be a replacement panel, on an older one they might choose to weld the cut and repair with filler or lead but in either case the hours add up and make it un-economic.

The very un-official tour!! led by an ex station operator who knew the plant inside out, it was amusing to see the Offical Guides discomfort at some of the places we were taken to, though im not sure that they even realised that we walked along under the main Live Steam pipes :o

I have been inside smaller coal-fired power stations before so knew what I was supposed to be looking at but the place is so big that you lose any idea of scale. For example, in a smaller station you might look from a walkway in a turbine hall and see the whole of the steam path through HP, IP and LP turbines and the generator mounted on the end of the turbines so it all makes some sort of sense, but in Drax its so big that you cant get an overall view, we walked along one of the turbo generator units and you cant see one end from the other.

A swap meet was held in the carpark and Jamie was doing much business with his Tech 2.
After the visit we returned to the Travel Inn for drinkies and a meal, I and 2 other cars returned south last night but the rest seemed to be quite comfortable in the bar so we may have to wait for their reports. :)
I just have to fix the chronic misfire that developed as I pulled off the M62 into the Travel Inn, it cleared after the visit and was fine all the way home until I pulled off the M1 at Nottingham

Many thanks to MikeD for arranging this trip.

Front and rear seats are pre-facelift leather, car is facelift. So what happened to the front seat airbags?
Not aware of any way to connect old seats into later car so would guess that he has removed the airbag warning bulb and I think that means that the whole airbag and seatbelt tensioner system is inoperative.

If he knows this and is selling an unsafe car then he is breaking the law.

I've heard about this.  I think it must have been dry as they were building the B station.  I assume they are all in operation now.
One of the towers had 'radiator' panels around its base rather than the usual water spray cascade. The inside was warm and dry but windy and was also used as a store.
There were large sliding doors around the base which could be moved to the windward side...presumably to help balance the cooling in winter.

If you ever get chance to have a good look at a Renaut bonnet catch do....its a right flimsy naff piece of poo made out of a thin bit of steel with a single fold in it......think it must have been designed by the placement student....

It was perfectly adequate when the bonnets hinged at the front edge, they just forgot to redesign it when they changed to crocodile bonnets. ;D
