V6 oil pan drain plug
« on: 16 April 2016, 14:21:13 »

So - last two MOTs have had advisories of an oil leak from the engine. Turns out that the leak is due to the oil pan rusting through from the outside.

I did enquire about a new oil pan from VX after the first MOT advisory but I didn't bother ordering one at the time because I thought it would be easy to get a used one from someone on OOF. Turns out it wasn't that easy and the only one I was offered had a drain plug stuck in it.

I already knew that the drain plugs are very soft so I took a chance and acquired it.

Phase 1 - drill out the plug

The job was made easier because GM have thoughtfully provide a dimple in the centre of the plug  :y but became more difficult with the larger sized drill bits when the plug started spinning in the oil pan........
before

after

Phase 2 is to clean up the thread in the bush.

Phase 3 is to rub / wire brush some surface rust off and give it a lick of paint.

Phase 4 involves buying a tube of grey 'glueing sealant' and actually fitting it.
