Possible rip-off merchants
« on: 18 September 2010, 22:51:28 »

A dear friend, a single lady of a certain age, has had a 7 yr old Pug 307. The sun roof stuck in the tilt open position, takes it to the garage, gets a phone call ' Very bad news I'm afraid, the motor has failed,  and can't be changed on its own. The whole sun roof has to be replaced at a cost of £1622 plus labour plus VAT' My friend said, 'Just wind it shut and I'll forget about it.' 'Can't do that either' they say. She traded it in elsewhere, and got about the same price for it as the purported repair bill.

I cannot believe this is true, however before ranting at the garage, has anyone here experience of these sun roofs?  I am quite sure, at the least, that they can be closed if the motor fails. :-/ :-/ :-/

I certainly am, I am absolutely disgusted with them. Unfortunately she lives some distance away, otherwise I would pay them a visit in person to give them a few choice phrases. If I can persuade her, doubtful, I will register a complaint with their appropriate trade body.

Thanks everyone for the input. I was sure it would have the same facility as the Omega for manual closing.

Can anyone answer the bit about having to change the whole lot if the motor goes? That would give me a bit more ammunition. :y :y :y

The motors can be replaced seperately. Whether Pug supply them seprately is another matter.

other than the engine going bandit or transmission be it auto or manual and severe body damage no car thats regarded as a modern cheaper end of the market car should ever warrent a 1600 quid repair bill for stuff like that.

don't people think theres scrapyards with perfect working sunroofs available for probably 200 sovs if they are proper belt and braces type of yard with vat and invoices to probably around a ton for ££ notes chief  :-?

should add to when i first started going scrap yards for mk2 escort stuff it was seen as being tight or what poor people did but i didn't care as i got some right old treasure out of scrap yards. Now it can be considered recycling and green to boot, little did i know as a 17 year old with a fetish for all things escort mk2 i was saving the planet.

oh and again 1600 sovs for a sunroof................ only a maniac pays that and i feel really bad for a woman told that and decieved into thinking the sunroof won't wind back manually grrrrrrrrrrrr.

Contact the BBC, they are always looking for rogue traders to expose on national TV.

Your local news teams love a good story ....

Unfortunately the lady concerned does not wish me to take it further, so I am constrained in my actions. It makes me furious when garages - and it nearly always is a garage - behave like this with women owners. :y
