cambelt slip - today's update
« on: 17 November 2007, 18:31:28 »

Just an update

belt kit fitted, set up just by eye, using the marks on the camcover. Won't have the tool I need till tomorrow.

Anyhow, after the belt was fitted, I turned the engine over by hand a few times. I've known harder V6's to turn, which made me a little concerned.

But I could feel the compression as I kept going round.

Now for the compression test (with a charged battery!)  :-/

2-4-6 bank, compressions are all fine as expected.
1-3-5 bank, compressions are definately lower on a couple of cylinders, but still just in the green.

Not sure if setting the belt up properly with the kit will help? I'm certainly not gonna start it until I've done that, I chickened out.

What are the thoughts... will it run? Shall I turn the key :-/

I'm prepared to hedge my bets that it will run, but may well have a slightly lower compression on those two - maybe the valves have just skimmed, enough to disturb their seating by a tiny amount?

Thoughts please!

Did you ever do a compression test before this issue?

At least it's potentially only one head - thankfully the easy one too

If needsbe, I'll just slap another head on that bank for now, and do a proper top-end overhaul when we get good weather?

IMHO if it turned over OK to do the compression test .. without any too nasty noises ... it is probably OK to try and start it then to set up the exact timing later.

just my 2.7 p's (inc VAT)

the uncertainty you have at the moment would suggest not turning with the key until you've accurately locked it into its correct position with the kit tomorrow

lets say you did turn it tonight on the key, if tomorrow when you set it up with the locking kit if it's running badly or not at all then you'll be wondering whether it was todays key turn that made it worse

...maybe

I reckon, sadly, its toast.  If the damage was enough to stop it running then, its still enough to stop it running now.

Nah. It was in gear. Turn the key James. If it's breaked already, so what? If it's ok ish, away you go.

Who knows. I just don't know anymore, it happend so fast.

With the cylinder compressions, although 2 not ideal, I recon it'll run.

I'm sure you'll agree, if needsbe, worst case (based on compressions) is I could just pop another 1-3-5 head on?

At least there's some compression so if there is damage it's only a slightly bent valve or two and the heads will probably have survived.

What are the highest and lowest readings?

Also, remember you are doing this test cold and the readings generally improve and become more consistent across cylinders when the engine is hot.

Additionally, the hydraulic lifters may not be fully pumped up, which will affect the readings - but it all depends what readings a good cylinder are returning against a bad cylinder. I'd normally expect them to be within 0.5 - 1 BAR (on a good engine that's just been run and if fully warmed up).

I'd run for a minute or two and have another go.

Three of us - however I'm not running it until I've got timing perfect, with my SP kit tomorrow. That's just me :y

I dont see the point....run it now.

There is little point in setting the timing spot on if your only going to have to strip it down again.

Given you actualy know how to fit a cambelt, the timing will already be better than that done by most garages without locking kits so set the tension and get it started with just the cam cover re-fitted, no aux belt and no inlet track....you have already cranked it to do a compression test!

If all is good, then set it all up properly in the morning with the kit, re-assemble, breath a big sigh of relief and enjoy 6 cylinder goodness again.......
