Changing a petrol tank on a Corsa C
« on: 29 December 2011, 19:18:35 »

Anyone done this or had any experience?

My very elderly parents have just had their car towed to a garage after having it run out of fuel. The Recovery man says the tank has been holed ( petrol theft or grudge?) They are too old to have a look themselves.

The independent garage it is now at say 400 quid plus labour for a new VX tank or 100 to repair it plus expenses. I would have thought that a replacement secondhand tank would be a better option on a 2005 car? There are two on Ebay.uk at the moment for 60 quid approx plus carriage.

How many hours labour to change one?

The other problem is they are fully comp but not comp enough to get a replacement car even after 50 years claim free with the same company. I shall try and get them a hire car for a couple of weeks unless I can find someone in Scarborough with a car that they can lend them!

Any advice appreciated

I wouldn't have thought it would be more than an hour and a half to fit a 2nd hand tank :-\

Referring to Haynes, it doesn't look that bad, they say it can be done with jacking up the rear, disconnect handbrake cables, move exhaust to one side, usual pipes, clips, wiring, couple of straps and then lower.

I had a new (replacement) tank fitted to our Corsa B recently. The procedure is as described and is about 2 hours labour. Used tanks off ebay are about £50 each new with ones being a bit more. Can't see the whole job costing more than £200 maybe - even with all new parts. If badly corroded then the centre exhaust section may need replacing also.

The tanks on the B's are prone to rust around the welded seam - is that the problem rather than anything more sinister perhaps?

Thanks for the replies.

My brother and his mate recovered the car from the garage this morning. The tank has a neat 6 mm diameter hole that had been drilled into it. New form of petrol theft.?

Hand inserted into tank with nut, bolt plus tank repair putty. Job done.

Might need a S/H tank sometime in the future. In the meantime the petrol thief will be able to come and drill it again...............

At least the parents are mobile again.

Good news that they're on the road again V despite what appears to be another fine example of work done by the worthless thieving scum who seem to be running free at the moment.

If there on a ramp a tank change is about 40 mins as its dead easy to do.

Corsa C tanks are plastic (would love to see one of the morons drill a metal tank!)

We used to when scrapping cars at the garage... Not a problem if you use a cone drill and common sense WRT speed and heat ;)

But then, petrol thieving morons probably don't have any common sense ;D ;D
