Cars you have owned in your driving history
« on: 10 November 2006, 23:56:58 »

Replying to the thread "1970s" got me thinking about the cars I have owned in the time that I have been driving (since 1992):

Here goes:

First car - I tried to stick to Rootes (or at least the old Rootes company) as Dad had a Hillman Minx which I loved.  I got a Talbot Horizon which was the closest I could manage. The reg was A 332 GPJ.  This lasted me all of 8 months before the rear suspension collapsed because of rust.  This number plate stood for "General Pile of Junk"  The sloppy gear change was the thing I remember most and the clattery engine.

I had a Fiesta which I paid £25 - this had 4 months of MOT and gave me 4 months of virtually free motoring.  I did not like it though.

I then moved over to Vaux, getting a MK3 Astra F 68 NNO.  I clocked up a huge milage in this - around 70K in 2 years.

Then got a Cavalier CDX, which I still have, in 1997.  This has 130K on the clock.

Nearly a year ago, I then purchased my Omega 2.5 CDX.

Which cars do you remember (fondly or otherwise)?

Hokay!! I like these posts.................

I'm assuming this includes company cars so.................

Passed my test in '86, (Sheehit!! twenty years ago!!)................

- Cortina 1.6 GL Saloon, LNS384Y. One of my father's company fleet. Lasted a week before I had an escapade with a sharp right hand bend and two fields.)

- Cortina 1.6 Crusader estate, LNS387Y. Another one of the family company cars, but by this time I was working for the copany!

- Escort 1.6 L. C768XMS. Absolutely horrendous POS in every way, but it was faster than the Cortina!

- Cortina MKIII 1.3L 2 door. Absolutely rotten. Bought for £20 and a stereo, scrapped the following weekend

- Cortina MKIII 1.3L 2 door. MOE664P. Bought as project. Learned how to weld on it then gave it away. Shame! They're worth a fortune now.

- Montego 1.6 L. E548HFS. Started falling apart the minute I got it and just got worse. Surprisingly good on motorways once it got up to speed tho'.

- VW Polo 900CC. TLS414X. Bought for £100 as Xmas pressie for then G/F. Split up and she sold it for £600. Did I see any of the profit? I don't think so!!!

- Cortina 1.6 GL. HLS11V. Bought as a favour for someone then he ripped me off. Long story!

- Fiesta somethingorother. Bought to make a quick £20 profit! Suceeded.

- Rover 3500 Auto. NGF502P. Acquired by odd means. Rotten as a pear and only went backwards. Fixed it up, straight through pipes used to set car alarms off, great fun. Traded for my first Trans Am.

- Sierra 1.8 LX, H825SMS. Nice car, bad time in my life. (Preferred the 2.0 twin cam GLX I got on loan tho'!!)

-'77 Pontiac Trans Am. T177TRV. Guy saw me coming. traded Rover for it, worst thing I've ever done. Took it for an MOT and the guy told me I'd die if I drove it home. I did and I didn't. Tried to restore it, but ended up breaking it.

- Escort Van. J567FAS. Hated with a passion.

- '75 Pontiac Firebird Esprit 4.2. Dog leg 3sp gearbox, no frills. Weird. Bought and broken for spares for the T/A.

- Vauxhall Astra 1.7 Merit N/A, L139LSG. One of my few brand new cars. Quite liked it, but it was replacing an Escort van.

- Cavalier 1.6 L saloon. Talked my boss into upgrading me after a week.

- Cavalier 1.8 LS hatch. K76CBM. Liked this one, lots of extras.

- Cavalier 1.7 TD CD hatch. Liked this one too although it was fairly slow!!

- Cavalier 2.0 GLS. M177YNG. Flying machine, bright red! Loved it!!

- '79 Pontiac 4.9 Turbo Trans Am Indy Pace Car replica. Wonderful except for it's appetite for engines.

- Peugeot 405 Style estate 1.9 N/A, M138???. Veeeeery comfy but wouldn't pull you out of bed.

- Peugeot 306 GLX TD. R679ABW. Faster than the 405 but too small. Quite liked it.

- '73 Pontiac 5.7 Esprit/Formula. Recieved in trade for pace car, then traded for running Merc'.....

- '79 Jag XJS pre HE V12. Spent a fortune repairing the bodywork then gave it away for £300 when it wouldn't run right!

- '89 Toyota Supra N/A Auto. G528RSR. Great fun, suited me to the ground. moneypit, but would have another.

- '73 Mercury Cougar 351. OFL51J. Ugleeeee! Fast as f*ck with drum brakes! You had to make an appointment to stop!! Eventually evaporated #1 piston then moved house so couldn't keep it anywhere, sold in a hurry for a fraction of it's worth. still running, saw it at the beginning of the year.

- Ford Orion. The less said the better!

- Mazda 626 GTi 2.0 16v 2 door. Great car real quick too! Swapped for............

- Carlton GSI 12v. G111SKX. 1st Carlton, nice but dodgy MOT when I bought it. retired at the end of it's MOT then sold for £200.

- Carlton 1.8 GL estate. Bought as a package along with..........

- Carlton 2.0 CD estate. made one car out of two and sold the spares. Got a car for nothing! Great! Indestructable. Sold on eBay for £75 to a fireman from Lewisham.

- Carlton 2.6 Diplomat. Bought during a spate of unemployment to make a profit. Suceeded.

- Carlton 2.0 GL estate. Bought during a spate of unemployment to make a profit. Failed!

- Carlton GSI 24v, G900NNS. Exchanged for a set of leather seats. Rotten as a pear. Still currently owned and awaiting the removal of it's running gear before being scrapped.

- Senator 3.0 24v. H287MSX. 1st Senator. Spent a fortune on the engine only to have it lunch it's bottom end.

- Senator 3.0 24v. J944USC. 2nd Senator. Spent a fotune on the engine, recorded 230 BHP on the dyno'! Sadly expire a week afer I sold it to a bloke from Newcastle.

- Omega 3.2 MV6. LW02OZO. Current ride. Love it, but it does cost me!!

There's probably a few missing, but that about covers it.

Ahhh it's nice to reminisce!!  8-)

Vauxhall Victor 1600 NWH852G My dad gave it to me instead of scrapping it. We lived about a mile up a private road and it saved walking to the shops when I was about 15 left it when we moved house.

Ford Cortina Mk4 1600 first car paid £325 for it mostly cause it had a cool stereo, scrapped when the back end of the chassis rails cracked.

Opel Ascona 2.0 nice motor, nicked off a pub carpark.

Volvo 245 GL another I scrounged off my dad.

Vauxhall Astra 1600 got it off a mate of the wifes for sod all ran it for a couple of years then scrapped it when parts of the chassis were handed to me in a box by my mate the MOT tester.

Ford Sierra 1600 was given this one by the landlady of a pub me and a mate were djing at as scrap. We went to pick it up and with the logbook she handed us a 4 month MOT got a couple of years out of that one for nothing.

Volvo 240 2.3 C88OVL was written off by fathers insurance but a new headlamp and a bit of hammering out the wing and it lasted a while.

Vauxhall Carlton 2.0GL Was my dads till he had to stop driving sold off to a mate when I got the Omega.

Vauxhall Omega 2.5 Reflection my current toy.

Started out with a 1200 Lada I bought off my dad when I passed my test
Fiat 131 mirafiori, met its end when hit by a 7 series BMW
Mk1 Ford escort, rusty as hell
Mk1 Ford capri, 1600 with auto box lasted a good few years
Humber Sceptre, hillman hunter shaped one
Mk1 Vauxhall Cavalier, only the 1256 engine though
VW camper van, split screen and everything
Mk4 Cortina, sold it to my brother who killed it
Renault Fuego, excellent but a bit of a rust trap
Vauxhall Chevette, you could see the road through the drivers foot well and the gear lever kept coming off in your hand
Datsun/nissan 240KGT skyline, had the straight 6 from the 240z, another one my brother got and killed
MK1 RS2000 Escort, great fun but fell prey to the rust bug
Opel Kadett 1.3 sr, astra MK1 shape
Ford sierra, dull
MK2 Astra GTE sold this and bought a Kawasaki GPX750
Mk1 Ford fiesta, cheap and cheerful
Mk2 Ford Granada estate
Rover 820 auto, lovely comfortable drive sold to get a car the wife could learn to drive in
Mk3 Ford Escort, which the wife then refused to drive
Mk1 Nissan micra
Vauxhall cavalier 2 litre, swapped the bike for this when my son arrived
Vauxhall Senator 2.6, always wanted one and wasn't disappointed
Daewoo Matiz, mainly for her
Volvo S40 T4, very quick
and finally
Vauxhall Omega estate

Think I've got them all, and I'm sure I'll get a few more yet :)

2.0 Turbo DTM Calibra in white - need I say more, think there are all of 12 left now, short ownership though  :-/

2.5 V6 Cdx 2001 Omega Saloon manual - bought to replace the Cav because Vectras are so crap, again, mainly the wife using it.
3.0 V6 Explod Omega Saloon Auto - My project run around, the family workhorse.

Too many, so will just give a list of the more memorable...

1972 Hillman Avenger 1.3
First car... lost 3rd gear after a week! Ran it for 9 months and scrapped it. truly terrible thing that refused to die!

Various Capris and Cortinas.

4 Rover Sd1s... 2.6 sucks (damn head gaskets!). 3.5 V8 was wonderful, especially in manual form but couldn't do bends! :)

5 Senators. All brilliant, one of the best cars ever made, simple as that.  :D

Jaguar XJ12. Iron fist in velvet glove is a great description of it. Lovely car, just the running costs were terrifying!

2 Alfa 164's. A 3.0 V6...tempremental. Then a year later the wonderful 3.0V6 Cloverleaf  :-*
Damn fast, handled well and sounded sooooo good!
Only sold because a stranger came up and offered me 3 times what I paid for it!
All car lovers MUST own an Alfa at some point!

2 Citroen Bx's
A 1.9 diesel that was amazing on fuel. Nice car as long as you were not in a hurry.
At the other end of the scale....
1.9 MkII 16v... Wow!  8-) What a car! Not that fast until you hit 4k rpm (redline at 7.5k) then really shifted.
Handling was nothing short of breathtaking. Gripped like nothing I have driven this side of £40k!
Will buy another sometime, truly wonderful hydro-pneumatic system (when it works!)

3 Peugoet 405's. All very very good and completely reliable. As a cheap runaround, hard to beat, and way ahead of the Cavalier/Mondeo.

Too many Omegas! ;)

2 Saab 9000's (including current beast). Tough, fast (scarily so with this one!) and don't handle as well as they should! Still love them though.

And a Vauxhall Royale 2.8 that saved my life when a double decker bus t-boned me after going through a red light!

well here is my list, i have been driving since 1987!!!

'72 Mini Clubman (first car i bareshelled and resprayed) FOB161L
'74 Austin 1300 (aka the boat, hydrolastic syspension made the ride very choppy)
'80 Fiesta 1300 sport (less said the better it is ) FEP131W
'77Capri 1600L (my first Capri and i should have learnt at that point)
'78 Datsun 120Y coupe (Pea green metallic, although it was a rot box it went well) BDD115T
'76 Capri 2.0S (i went back for more trouble, it was the last time)
'77 Mini 1275GT (Second car i bareshelled and restored, only did 80 miles after rebuild and someone hit me head on, nearly killing me!!) WPG623S
'67 Austin Seven Mini (Mk1 mini the orignial and the best) NAC629F
'77 Mini Clubman estate (fantastic for 'entertaining the ladies in' )
'91 Mini racing green (turned out the be a stolen car that had been rung, nearly got done for it as well!!)
'76 Vauxhall Magnum Estate ( bought for £50 as a stop gap after losing all my money on the stolen Mini)
'81 Cavalier 1.6GL (my first Mk2 and i loved it to bits) BYD161X
'78 Mini 1000 (after aquiring 9 points i had to get something a little more 'insurance friendly')
'87 BMW 318i (i always wanted an E30 BMW, lovely car even though it was the base model) D586MOP
'85 Mini 1000 (bought a house and needed something cheap and cheerful) B115JAL
'83 Audi 80 5S (i have always loved 5 cylinder cars, the noise is awesome) UIA4631
'86 Cavalier SRi (bought for peanuts with a blown gearbox, fixed the box and ran it for years)
'85 Cavalier SRi (bought this shortly after buying the first one, was ruinning 2 at the same time)
'87 Cavalier CDi (the 2.0 model, ex vauxhall car, lovely bit of kit for £500) E660YVS
'92 Nissan Sunny ZX (not the coupe!! this was a little pocket rocket, bought with a snapped cambelt, put a new head on it and away we went) H29CBA
'82 Porsche 924 (everyone knocke the 924 but it was a nice, well balanced car 125BHP left it a little under powered) SYG31W
'86 Cavalier CDi (returning to something i knew and it was given to be by my dad)
'83 Porsche 924 turbo (a wolf in sheeps clothing, not by todays standards, 177 bhp and a torbo that would lag like hell and then come on boost halfway round a corner, life was always interesting) VPG31W
'85 Audi 90 (back to the 5Cyl cars again)
'84 Audi Coupe 5E (bought this to play around with whilst i had the 90 as well)
'88 Nissan Bluebird (blew the engine up on the 90, this was given to me just after we had bought our first house, money was tight)
'95 Citroen Xantia (Yes thay are french, but hell they are comfy) N511WRW
'86 Cavalier Convertible (a summer car that i still have) NKZ2514
'97 Citroen Xantia estate (ditto the comment above)
'00 Zafira 1.8 (got bored of it quickly so modded it with 17's, lowered, tints, DVD's, big sound system, Stainless exhaust!!!) NKZ2515
'00 Omega 2.5 (there isn't much i haven't said about this car already, aside from what do i replace it with!!!) V48HVS

So there we go 31 cars in 20 years.

This doesn't include those that have been bought for spares or to sell on

Passed my test in.....2005!

Had a '93 Vauxhall Corsa 1.4i It was crazy fast for what it was - L288 KJS....I killed it by running it when it had a dodgy CHG! It lasted a month and went with a pop  ;D

Now have a 2000 Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 16v GLS Quite well specced wee car, but I'm on the hunt for a Vectra or Omega in the new year  :)

Passed my test in 1997, in 9 years I've had:

Learnt on my mums D reg 1.6 Belmont.  This car lasted nearly 15 years with minimum maintinance only failed to start once in taht time, a lovley car.

L 709 SFB reg 1.0 lt Fiat Uno, first car, not bad for cheap little car but being Fiat repair bills were hidious.  This one survived me to move on to a new owner.

G 509 KWD  E30 BMW 316i.  My first BMW and first rear wheel drive car.  A beautiful machine, spent thousands on it but blew the engine.  Eventually scrapped. Converted me to a BMW Driver.

W 495 SAC 1.8 Ford Focus Zetec with climate pack.  Lovley car, but lost so much money on it I will never buy new again.  This one survived.

Y reg Vx Astra 2.0 turbo deisel.  Had it one hour before it broke down.  NEVER EVER GO TO CARCRAFT WEST MIDLANDS!!! They are a bunch of crooks.

Got the focus back.

D 498 FYP  BMW 635CSi, £1300 ebay bargain, Sold my focus to help pay for this to be done.  http://www.qvrefurb.co.uk/gallery_car.asp?carId=64&ListType=2

Shes sick at the moment, needs a new head gasket after catastrophic coolant leak.  2 months after I had a new head gasket fitted.  Sigh.

K 916 XGS  2.0 CD Carlton Estate, lovely car, indestructible engine, topped the ton with only 2 cylinders and no exhaust manifold.    Used to much fuel but this one survived me.

M reg Laguna 2.2 Diesel.  Had it one month before the gearbox lunched itself.  Scrapped.

And of course.

M 535 SWE 2.5 V6 CD Estate.  nice to be back in a big Vauxhall.  Fingers crossed this might survive a while.

Next car to be either ALPINA B10 Bi-Turbo or a Lotus Carlton, Identical performance, identical used prices, both as rare as each other. Will be a tough choice if I ever get hte money.  Go to www.mcp-motorsport.co.uk if you want a look, they have one of each.

Good taste apart from the small one!

My mum used to have a 1.3 Estate reengined with the GLS 1.6 (80bhp) that was quick - the noddy engine had blown up!

I ended up fitting a 1.6 axle as well - briliant car

I took it to my dads work for some welding and was followed on the way home - by an off duty cop - I just wish I had booted it - tosser was thrashing his Escort struggling to keep up with an ancient estate car (with good handling) being driven ordinarily

Y reg 1.3 Triumph Acclaim - decent little car really, mega reliable, went well for what it was, though suspect handling.
D reg Vauxhall Belmont - only had 3 months, hated it even before I bought it. wrecked first engine by putting it in 1st gear at 70mph. 2nd engine never went as well.
G reg Vauxhall Astra GTE MkII 2.0 8v - fun, but hopeless handling. Only had a year, insurance was silly.
G reg Rover 216GSI - good reliable workhorse. As fast as GTE, but handled and stopped better.
A reg Vauxhall Nova 1.2 - found it in garage, completely forgot I put it in there...
W reg Rover 25 1.6 - great little car let down by suspect build quality. Goes well, handles amazing for FWD.
R reg Vauxhall Omega MV6 - only meant to keep 6 months, had it 3yrs so far...

Mrs TheBoy, since I've known her, has had
B reg Metro Vanden Plas. Not bad, certain fun in thrashing it non stop.
A reg Nova - the one that got put in garage and forgotten about  :-[
P reg Rover 400 diesel - Excellent car.
R reg Rover 400 diesel - Excellent, until a Mondeo rearranged back end, was never same after.
51 reg Ford Focus 1.6 - Absolute junk. I've driven some crap in my time, and this equalled them.
W Reg Rover 25 - yep, my old one.

Had the following bikes - Yam RS125, Kawa ER-5, Kawa ZX-10

Also had the following works vans - Morris Ital, Austin Maestro, Ford Escorts, Transits, Fiesta.

Nice to see the old Rootes names being listed - Singer Vogue and Gazelle plus the various Hillman Avengers.

I forgot in my list above the vans.

I had a 92 transit 190 - J 967 AWE.  That was a great van, having done over 200K when I sold it.  Looking back, should never have sold it.

Now got a 98 Transit Hi Cube (the really tall and long one).  This has 150K

Also have a transit minibus, a 98 Transit.

Great to read about the cars that have been owned - I just wish I was old enough to drive when cars like the Avenger, Imp, Hunter, Sceptre etc. were still being produced!
