The End Of Free Banking?
« on: 15 November 2006, 08:06:33 »

Last week there were rumours of credit card companies reintroducing yearly charges (wonder who’ll be the first?) Then yesterday First Direct Bank said they are going to start charging £10 a month for those customers that don’t have £1500 a month paid into their accounts.
Sounds like a kick in the teeth for the not so well off & it’ll affect women that take extended maternity leave etc…….

I'm not with them (& nor will I be now). I hear they're very good, but think it's out of order.

Its because the banks will soon have to clear cheques in a couple of hours rather than 3 days so they will loose the interest plus people are asking for money back they have been over charged from bank charges for letters/going overdrawn/bounced cheques. I have read of one bloke getting £9000 back after threatening to take them to court. The banks have always screwed people in one way or another and as soon as one is made illegal they think up another one.

this is excellent news and long over due.

Used to work in financial services so i know this is just a money maker for the banks.

However they wil just increase other charges to recoup  :(

They manage to clear cheques quickly in other countries like Sweden without charging the earth. It is a money making exercise. I wish they'd just be honest and say so. As soon as one does it, the rest have to follow in order to stay competitive (and by that I mean shareholders, not customers).

If HSBC started giving away free Bananas and signed photos of Jason Donovan, the others wouldn't be far behind with other fruit and Z list celebrity offerings.

;D ;D i`ve lost myself - was reading metro as i typed and was replying to the metro article

what a dumbo  :D

the metro thing was advising that the banking system will be overhauled next year and internet ttransfers wont have to clear between banks and also that the cheque clearing process time is to be slashed.

This is excellent news - the end of free banking on this thread clearly is not. but i think the two are linked - if banks lose intrest in the clearing prcess as planned they will recoup elsewhere ( such as annual fees)

If it's any help, the clearing changes don't come into effect until November 2007.

The High Street Banks have no plans to levy fees at this current time - First Direct is an Internet Bank set up to cream off the top earning customers, who provide income via loans, mortgages & savings.  They are simply using this as an excuse to clear house of all the lower earners who are more service hungry and cost more to maintain.

UK banks don't charge for DD's, cheques or all those little plastic cards you use to scrape the ice of your windscreens on a frosty morning - First Direct just want it all on a plate.

Rant over.
