Fnarlin Damn Frikin Car!
« on: 17 November 2006, 09:07:18 »

bloody thing - either gona take a match to it or... take a fookin nuke to it...

M62 west, near burtonwood... pish smoke n steam all over the show, think shit... so pull into services quick (luckily about 400 yards to go)

pulled in, steam n shit all flying from the bonnet, smelt quite funky (unlike regular steamy coolant) pop the bonnet...

right bank of the engine is soaked, all browny water sloshed all over the show... lower crossmember at front all soaked, the rear of the engine soaked, fook all coolant in the bottle, loads of steam, shit, mess... hisssssssss

what coolant i find is a manky brown color (was a lovely blue color 2 days ago when I changed it), check oil and its low... just below minimum...

call the rac - they go to birch services otherside of manchester  wait another hour, finally they arrive...

diagnosis??

guy says coolant hose at the rear of the engine split, complete arse of a one to get to aswell, so get towed home...

back at home, check over, oil is still low, there is a bit of throth in the coolant... compression on all cylinders is fine tho soooo guessing has to be the oil cooler...  so oil would of gone swoosh into the cooling system, blown the hose, gone pished all over...

oppsing thing

cant afford to get it fixed now till january as im proper skint till then, so choices are:

ebay it for pennies or porn
split it & sell bits
burn it
blow it up
sell it to some smackhead
wait and fix it...

Bugger :(

The little hose from hbv to coolant bridge seems to be a weak point after a oil cooler failure.

good chance radiator may be away - pour some coolant/water into header tank see if it stays there.

I did this on the v6 vectra i have just bought ( with mayo everywhere and oil cooler gone) imagine my surprise when i filled the header tank and found my feet immediatley got soaked as it poured straight out the bottom of the radiator.

Fiddly but do able job  :y

given how wet that lower crossmember was, i wouldnt put it past it...

altho when filled with water when the rac guy came to test, the rear was the only part which pissed watter out when the engine was started only...  didnt seem to leak from the front?!?!

If you cant repair it for a while I would get some degreaser into the coolant then run it till warm to circulate it, let it sit for a day or so then drain and flush with clean water.  This will break up the mayo in the radiator and heater and stop the oil soaking into hoses (they go soft and then can split if oil is not cleaned out)
If leaving it for the winter period you will then have to refill with antifreeze.

When you come to do the oil cooler change it would be a good idea to remove the water pump, its the only way of really flushing out the block.
