So. Booked an eye appointment online. Relatively short notice but it looked like the only slot available so I thought I was in luck. Right the way through the process... Showed as available, got the email confirmation.
Make my merry way down to the local town of brilliance and delight (or what has in my absence become the set of a low-budget zombie apocalypse film)... Literally ran out of things to look at so went in a little bit earlier than my appointment.
"I'm here for my contact lens check" "they've all been cancelled" "have they now" "yes, the optician is ill" "well, it let me book it" "didn't you get a phone call? They've called everyone."
..."yes. Actually I did get a phone call telling me it was cancelled. I just thought I'd give up an hour of my time to come here today, park up, cross my fingers that the car is still there and not alight... walk through the desolate wasteland that used to be the high street... To have this scintillating exchange. I find it the best use of my time, never mind the multiple jobs I could be doing while the weather holds. For oppss sake".
Suffice to say I will be changing opticians. I can't remember the last time they did anything other than make a complete Horlicks of anything I needed...
