SWMBO usually gets a turkey crown from the supermarket/Costco but this year decided she wanted a fresh turkey and she was going to buy it from a proper local independent butcher. It was duly ordered the other week and she went to collect it yesterday. In hindsight she should have probably asked how much it would be as she ordered it but she didn't ..
... £68!!!! :o :o :o :o
It'd better be bl**dy nice!
-
Well, the cheap stuff from the supermarkets is about £3/kg according to the non stop ads on the telly, or £7/kg for crown.
So lets guess a better one from a butchers is double that, that's a modest 11kg turkey?

I noticed, on the telly ad, that the M&S one was £65. Ridiculous price for a glorified chicken. We paid £20 for a turkey crown, which is basically all that gets eaten on a turkey anyway.
Unless you are partial to dark meat full of stringy tendons.
-
Coming from a large family, when I was a kid, we were always getting 25-30kg turkeys, which, TBH, all the meat was stripped by Xmas Day.
That never stopped mum from still doing turkey stews and turkey soup well into the new year. They were so crap, you could see the bottom of the pan when she cooked it. No wonder I'm anti vegetarianism ;D

I would say that I'd scoff the nice bits, and give the crap to the cats.
However, I'm realistic enough to know reality, and my place in the pecking order. Hence we have a crown ;D

Turkey stew, possibly. Turkey soup, hmmmmm, maybe. But turkey curry....no!

Reality was that it was water stew, water soup. Curries weren't invented in that part of Buckinghamshire at the time... ...I didn't break my curry virginity until I was about 16, when I went straight in with a Vindaloo.
-
Until a couple of years ago we always bought the turkey from a local farm. Iirc it was around £75 for a7kg bird. I never thought it tasted that good, although I don't really like turkey anyway. A couple of years ago swmbo decided to try one from Sainsburys for half the price and all agreed it was at least as good, maybe better than the farm version.

just tried to weigh it but it's physically too big for the kitchen scales ..... but SWMBO said it's 12lb

Which is just under 6kg. F-a-duck, that was a bloody expensive turkey :o

Ime its about the going rate for a "fresh" Turkey.
-
As a teenager (he's 32 now) my lad used to be a Saturday boy at the local butchers and one of the perks at Christmas was a fresh turkey, ham, gammon etc. The turkeys were marked up at about £70 back then for the size we had. It shocked me at the time as we always have turkey crown.

You'll have to stand on your bathroom scales and weigh yourself holding the roasting tray, stick the turkey in the tray and weigh yourself again, and work out the difference. You need to do that to let the OOF membership know how big a fresh turkey they'll get for £68. ;D

Probably dispatched at the end of November. :)

I must admit I can't see the attraction of Turkey , dry , almost tasteless , waste of a dinner for me :(

We went this route about 10 years ago.
Tough as old boots.
Never again.

You're cooking it wrong :)
Its not my favourite, but it makes a nice change from the red meat roasts I get the rest of the year :). I'm certainly not complaining that I'll fall out of bed, scratch me nuts, make myself look (almost) respectable, fall down the stairs. stuff a roast turkey with all the trimmings down my neck, fall asleep in front of the Queen and constantly break wind for the rest of the day.

Turkey is as dry as a nuns pussy however it is cooked.

The only good thing I can say about it is that it isn't chicken. Chicken is vile and disgusting and no human should ever eat it. It smells like human shite ffs, why would anyone want to eat that ?
And as for their miscarriages* aka "eggs". Words fail me.
* I suppose they are actually unfertilised ovum. Still disgusting whatever term you use.
-
I can't understand the popularity of chicken either, Albs. A few years back I said to a work colleague that I hated chbicken, to which he replied "How can you hate chicken; it doesn't taste of anything?"
Well, if it doesn't have any taste, why eat it? ??? ??? ???
Ron.

A nice duck for us ;)

Are you sure it's not human shite that smells like chicken?
Which came first, the chicken or the human shite? ;D
-
The chicken, otherwise we wouldn't have eaten it to find out what shite smelled of ;)

it shouldn't be dry, but I'm not a fan either. Goose if you insist on poultry, wild boar if it's supposed to be a treat....
-
We had duck one year. Looked very big, but hardly any meat.
-
Two kilos for two people, I doubt we'll starve... ;D
-
There are enough chocolates and cakes and biscuits here to last till March. Better than socks, I suppose.

What? :o Socks are good, and you can never have enough... Wearing work boots, I consume about twenty pairs a year :-[

As mentioned in the happy Christmas thread, the turkey has gone in the bin uncooked. So need to visit Sainsburys asap to tell them they owe me £40. If they argue I shall tell them my £6 grand a year ( plus petrol & diesel)custom will be returning to Tescos.

They're open boxing day so you should have put it outside and returned it tomorrow.
Something like "I've got a turkey outside that was off when we came to cook it. Do you just refund me now or do it bring it into the store." ;D
-
I think the plan is to freeze it for the moment. Then if they argue about the refund I can whack them round the ear with it.

a quick google shows multiple complaints to may supermarkets about "gone off turkey" this year
was it last year there was a mass of complaints :-\
We just had a frozen crown ,slow braised in the oven in stock and butter ,tender and very nice :)
sorry to hear that some people have yet again had a bad experience
a real shame because Christmas dinner is something to look forward to :(

Ours was tender and moist because............I read the f***in manual this year. Butter and salt on top, covered in foil and cooked in water...not fat. Remove foil, baste and whack the oven up for half an hour. You'd think I'd have known after cooking about thirty of the bastards. ;D

I've got a couple of 'dressy' shirts that I don't get the chance to wear very often. The one I'm wearing seems to have shrunk a bit since last year. Perhaps it's a bit damp in the wardrobe. :-[

Fatter than some, slimmer than Jaime others. :y

Just had our turkey. We had to shop around but found a butcher that had sold the legs and wings off a small turkey. No problem we will have what is left. Do you want it jointing? Err no thanks. Roasting joints or whole birds isn't a thing here.
3.5 kilos 16 euros. It was delicious, nicest we have ever had. That includes a bronze fresh turkey that I did 90 mile round trip to collect from a farm near Stratford on Avon. That cost about £70 all those years ago.
I remember back in the seventies getting a bargain “ fresh turkey” from Leicester market on Christmas Eve. Got it out on Christmas Day to cook and it was decidedly off. We went without.
Clothes. I bought a nice pair of trousers in M&S in Spring. Went to wear them last week for the first time and they had shrunk. Must be a common wardrobe problem.

Yes......clothes tend to shrink more as we age. No idea why.

Our Christmas dinner was spot on, though due to being essentially dead, I was unable to do it proper justice. But Mrs TB cooked it to perfection, along with all the veg and trimmings...

turkey is nothing special even when cooked properly, like ours was. Add all the 'trimmings' and the plate looks like the bottom of a restaurant's dustbin.
The honey roast gammon we had yesterday was sublime.
We'll have a light dinner tonight so we can actually enjoy the Christmas pudding.
-
My Christmas dinner was spot on, probably aided by the fact I was not feeling great, so I just had a small taste of most of it, rather than a mountain of food.
But Christmas Pudding? No thank you. Why on earth would anyone want to eat dried up fruit is way beyond me.... ;)
-
by the fact I was not feeling great
And for about the tenth year in a row, I didn't get to open pressies on Christmas Day :(

You are obviously allergic to Christmas, just ignore it next year.

When it's rammed down your throat from September onwards it's difficult to ignore it. ::)
Maybe I should take my own advice and move to Pakistan, Saudi Arabia or North Korea! :y

Agreed. Swmbo likes Christmas Pud for some unfathomable reason, but she does make me a sublime sherry trifle for dessert at Christmas.
I have never eaten anything with dried fruit in it, apart from giving it a brief try when I was in short trousers.

I thought it was me that was the miserable bastard?
Just been to the tip with all the Christmas wrappings and stuff. As I threw it into the big skip, I wondered just how much turkey was in there. About half a ton, probably 😂
-
I imagine Aldi will have quite a few turkeys in their skip if reports are to be believed ;D
I just made a curry with what remained of ours ,plus peppers and onion (so very healthy)

Just been having a read of that. Tesco and Morrisons too. Yuk!
We got our crown at Asda and, even thought the use by date was 26th, it was fine.

our's was frozen, purchased weeks ago, our meat freezer sits at about -30c ,so no issues there.
the pork, gammon, bacon we got fresh from a local farm shop that i've been using for many years ,
the problem with buying "fresh" meat etc is you have to trust it's been cleaned ,butchered and stored correctly at all stages along the delivery chain .

The 'stored correctly' bit is the one I can see them falling down on. I've worked in warehouses and foodstuffs get opened and half eaten, smashed with the fork lift and left in a corner till someone says "What's this ere then ?"

that said ,my gran quite often had rabbits and pheasant hanging in the outhouse for God knows how long and I'm still alive ;D

Yes, I don't really understand that. You can get 21 day matured steak in Asda, but it still looks red and fresh. Perhaps red meat and game birds are different from poultry? I'm sure someone on the forum will know.
-

My Dad used to shoot so this was a common sight for me growing up as well, and he always used to say that you left pheasants hanging until you saw the maggots appear. :)
Why this dosn't work with chicken and turkey though I've no idea. :-\

From my relatively recent experience, this is still very much the case :-X
