Title: oxford local members with a T8 socket ?????
Post by: MaxV6 on 30 July 2015, 15:01:46
need to fit new crank sensor……   and my spline/torx socket set seems to be missing in action in it's entirety……    turned out both sheds and both cars , no sign of it…..    :(

clearly, minus a working crank sensor i can't just pop out and get one……  Argghhhhh

if anyone can pop down to berinsfield and rescue me i'd be eternally grateful….

(there's Guinness or tea/coffee  available to hand…..    )

Have you tried a ring spanner(or a 12point ordinary socket) on it? Something in the 6mm or 1/4" range from memory. Be gentle.

if only…..  ;)   sadly,   all my existing "normal" sockets are single hex, and i don't have a ring spanner set, …..  :( not really fully equipped with car mechanic-y tools….  just the basics, if that…        now then….  if you need to rout out a piece of timber,  or,  build a house,  / recording studio/ garage    , or fix a guitar….  or a computer…..  then i'm yer man…..

(i also seem to be missing one of my smaller "normal" socket sets…. but have another so could get by ……   )

Bugger I almost drove past yours today but I'm nowhere near now.

Gently try a small, normal socket :y

Make sure fuel gauge is showing at least a quarter tank and that the car is sitting level.

If those conditions are met, then give the bottom of the tank a whack whilst someone else cranks it... If it fires, your fuel pump is toast, if it doesn't, then check the two purple relays in the engine fusebox :y

You can also use the test port on the fuel rail to check for fuel supply/pressure to help diagnose the pump.
Release the pressure in the system, and crank the engine. If you have fuel and pressure again, then the pump is working. You do need to be sure that the fuse, relay and cranksensor are good before condemning the pump!

problem solved,  rather sneakier than fuel rail pressure….

Replacement crank sensor,  (pattern part…. I know….  don't bother lecturing me….  it was the quickest cheapest solution….  )   had a plastic spacer ring around it…behind the rubber seal ring…  .    In the half light last night,  didn't spot that it hadn't gone all the way home,  did the bolt up so tight it cracked the body around the brass insert, but couldn't see that it wasn't all the way in…..   removed it today,  having got the thing back up in the air to get under it….  and spotted the issue….

solution….  remove plastic ring,  replace with the now rather hard and inflexible O ring seal from old sensor….   only marginally shorter,  but will at least fit in the receiving hole ….    then refit nice new flexible seal in front of it,  then refit new sensor, and use a wider washer on the bolt to spread the pressure on the mount …..

cabling routed up to gearbox coolant ? pipe still in heat shield, and loosely tied,  then up to brake lines,  also loosely cable tied,  then across the top having rotated the connector plug around to face back towards the passenger side….   plenty of slack, and completely clear of exhaust etc….

car now starts….

it's still breaked every other way from xmas… but it starts !!!
