Power Sounder Availability
« on: 27 January 2010, 13:17:09 »

I was at the local stealer yesterday buying some oil and while I was there I thought I'd ask how much a replacement power sounder would be. I'm a bit uneasy about not having a full Thatcham alarm and mine is a bit mullered due to leakage from the batteries.

Gave him the part number and he had a rummage through the computer and announced that they are no longer available. :o

Has anyone else found this or was he just being a muppet?

Part Number is: 09 231 886

Have no experience of trying to buy one. But what effect will this have on insurance. If the part goes faulty but you are unable to replace it, is the car no longer original and hence only insurable as a modified car ?

Interesting question. I guess you'd not be able to declare the car as having the "manufacturer fitted" alarm so it might increase the premium.

That's mainly why I want to replace it. Maybe if an assessor finds a dead one they would give you the benefit of the doubt. (most owners would not notice it's dead unless it started playing up or spontaneously combusted).

Local Vx dealer quoted me just shy of £90 plus vat supply only... did not have them in stock though. Repaired mine, as it was getting impossible to live with, however have just taken delivery of a brand new Holden equivalent part which I got for about £35.... took three months to get it though!  :-?
Also part nr. 09 231 886.

Mine packed up very shortly after picking up the Omega from the second hand dealer.

As I had to go back to deal with another unrelated issue (cats) I asked him to look into it.  He phoned the local stealer (W J King) and they had them in stock.

This was over six months ago now though, ended up getting it for free too  :y.

That's the one. Mine even says "Made in Australia" on the back. ;)

Indeed, they are all made by Bosch in Australia.... my mate back in Oz got me one from a Holden concession in Darwin and sent it over, but it was in a big parcel that came via surface mail (with a load of Aussie beer  :D ), so it took a bloody long time to get here! I should have had it before Christmas, but it eventually arrived Tuesday.

Yep, I'd have no problem changing the batteries, and have done this for other members in the past. This one's a bit far gone, though, due to leakage onto the PCB. Can't see it working reliably if repaired. Perhaps I'll have another go at it and see what I can do.
