Title: 02 Omega 3.2 Ex-Police Special
Post by: 6cylinderman on 13 January 2008, 12:56:36
Mmm, it says to post photos of your car here if you're proud of it.  Can't say I am right now, but then again I just got it yesterday straight from the police.  I've started by removing the stickers from the bonnet, roof and front right wing.  It started to rain so I took some photos instead.  It's a slow arduous process, but strangely rewarding.  More photos will follow of the engine.  What have I taken on?  Help!  :o

I hope to post more photos as I progress.

Hi, not to bad, a little bit of time and she will be looking good as new, ;) and there is one thing with driving a White Omega, most people will move over as you come up behind them  ;D ;D

At least they were sympathetic. The fools that did mine at BCA use Ajax powder, razor blades and a scouring pad!!

£700 later it was all sorted out only for me to put the stickers back on  ::)

Yes, 50k warranted miles.  They don't cover a bike mileage here in N.I.  Less roads!  :)

OOooooooh larrrvly! I'd love to get my hands on that bodywork! As has been mentioned, perhaps white spirit, petrol, alcohol etc. We have some quite good 'Servisol' label remover at work as well. Stinks to high heaven though! Then a bloody good polish  :y

Fingers crossed for you the wiring isn't too butchered  :-[ Does the car have cruise control? A new interior would be lovely i'm sure. The police specs always seem to have old style steering wheel and armrest. Wonder if wiring is there for goodies?

Still like it mind, i think it's the 150mph calibrated clocks that make me twitch  ;D All the best  ;)

P.S. Nice matching astra!

Nice, I like it too, but I always thought that the police cars are beat to hell especially with the officers driving them as if they were stolen... the police cars here in the states loose so much value, you can get a used one 2-3 years old for no more then 3000$... but if thats what makes you happy I guess...

I would love to get a limited slip on mine and perhaps one of those european clusters but I have no idea how the wiring is going to work as we got the extra oil and volt gauges and you guys have the screen in that spot...  :-?

Thanks for the comments.  Sure, the ex-police cars get a tough life but this is reflected in their service and maintenance.  If I had a bigger budget, I would've gone for a nicer private car.  I know my limits as a "mechanic, heck I wouldn't even call myself one, but hopefully with the help of the guys on this forum, I'll learn a bit along the way.

I know I've jumped straight into the deep end with this car, but I'm hoping that a bit of hard graft and determination will see me through.  I've concentrated on the bodywork so far, but I'll turn my attention to the engine soon.  There's suspected head gasket failure, but I'm hoping the symtoms have been mis-diagnosed for those of oil coler/heater matrix failure.  If not, well....  :'(

I've had good luck removing stickers and adhesive residue using a light penetrating oil called WD40. Spray it on, let it stand, then rub with a soft cloth.

Hi Elvin.  Thanks for the tip, bud.  I know WD40 well.  I use it lots on my bike.  Got 5L in the garage.  It's worth a try.  Nice looking motor by the way!   8-)

lol @ the WD! Elvin, WD40 is like a british institution, EVERY house has a can of WD, if in doubt WD it!!! Should give good protection against the rain and rust as well!!!  :y

So does it have cruise control then? Have you driven the car yet mate? That will be a special day when it's working tip top!  :D

Well, I never assume. Wasn't sure if it was available there. Should have known better. WD40 lubes the world.   [smiley=beer.gif]

I haven't driven her much, mate, just on and off the low loader.  The power steering resevoir was nicked out of it for another car, so the steering is very heavy!  I'd like to get the Oil Cooler replaced first along with a good service before I drive her.

RE: Cruise Control.  I haven't had a proper look around her yet, but I don't think she has cruise control, it being a poverty spec ex plod.  It doesn't have heated seats either  :-/ , but hey, what you never had you don't miss.  Cruise isn't a big advantage in N.I. and as for heated seats, mine are methane powered.  :-?

Cruise control is easy to retro-fit. Just add the stalk (assuming they haven't butchered the wiring the connector for the cruise control is there) and, on a manual, possibly add the clutch switch and then get it enabled on a Tech 2. Like you say, though, not the most useful thing in NI.
