General Discussion Area / Ratty Omega
« on: 18 July 2015, 22:05:06 »
Passed in Swindon at 06:30 this morning by a black Omega that looked like it had been raped by a scoobie and with a large rat as a bonnet mascot. Ring any bells?!

Car Parts, bits For Sale & Wanted / Parts free to collector.
« on: 10 January 2015, 14:32:18 »
I've traded in the Mig. I'm very sorry to see her go but the valve-stem seals were beyond my ability as a tinkerer.

In my shed I have some brand new rear brake shoes for a 2001 2.6 CDX saloon (auto).

I think I also have a central locking motor.

I also have a headrest for the rear centre seat of the older 2.5 version, still in the plastic from when the car was new.

Parts have to be picked up but I'd rather they went to someone on here than eBay.

Omega General Help / 2.5TD timing chains
« on: 24 August 2014, 11:20:52 »
Hi all, hope everyone is well.

Question for the tractor owners: has anyone ever had a timing chain snap on the 2.5 diesel M51 engine? Any idea what sort of mileage you get before they [the chains] need replacing?

Cheers.

Omega General Help / Oil treatment: seal conditioner
« on: 15 May 2014, 09:03:54 »

Anyone had any experience of using Forte seal conditioner? Good or bad. Did it make any difference?

Apparently you add it to the oil and it softens and slightly swells hardened seal so they are tight again. Presumably we're looking at valve-stem seals here. I assume you put it in for a few days before your oil change is due and then do an oil change as usual. Thinking of my puff of smoke on startup (2.6 CDX from 01 - the trouble year!).

So, anyone had any experiences of using it?

Cheers,

J

Omega General Help / Air conditioning valve.
« on: 31 March 2014, 09:22:20 »

Seems to be a hot-topic at the moment.

My (high pressure?) air-conditioning inlet valve has started leaking - you can see it! It is the front-one just behind the radiator and in front of the auxhillary belt casing. Dealers quotes a fiver for the part but how do I get the old one out? (And yes, I'll get someone to drain it first!)

Omega General Help / Crank sensor?
« on: 29 March 2014, 21:43:38 »
Just checking this makes sense ...

Bit of a nasty turn this evening. Came over the crest of a hill on a twisty-turny lane and the engine just died. Good job I'd been to the toilet before setting off as it was a hairy descent with heavy brakes and heavier steering. Refused to restart. Engine spun but nothing else. No faults codes stored but 2 pending faults: P0705 (gearbox) and P0725 (crank sensor). Fiddled for ages - nothing. Then, 2 hours later it just started. Drove home and almost made it when it died again. Pushed it the last bit home.

Certainly I can see if the crank sensor failed that would stop the engine PDQ. Why only a pending fault though? Presumably the fact it started after a rest infers heat is causing the failure? Is that what you'd expect if the crank-sensor needs replacing?

General Car Chat / ODB2 bluetooth reader
« on: 26 January 2014, 11:26:59 »
Hi chaps,

One of my neighbours is having some car trouble with her Corsa and I've been meaning to get an ODB2 reader for the laptop for some time when I saw this. Just links to your phone. Anyone had a play? Does it work with the miggy? Any good?

Omega General Help / Omega saloon (facelift) 2.6CDX ride height ...
« on: 13 December 2013, 21:02:49 »
I replaced the rear springs about this time last year. Car seems fine but yesterday I had 4 (large) adults in it and even cornering seemed to produce a scrape from the mudflaps. So, I've been looking at her and trying to convince myself if she's looking a little low or not.  :-\ So ...

Can anyone tell me the ride-height measurements as measured from the ground through the centre of the wheel to the centre of the wheel arch? 2001 2.6 CDX saloon on standard springs. No tinkering done!

Cheers,

J.

PS. Love the Christmas smileys!  :y

Omega General Help / Oil leak: suspected valve stem seals.
« on: 21 June 2013, 13:31:21 »
Hi all,

Been a while since I posted. Hope all are well.

For a while now (9 months?) I've had an oil leak but I've not managed to see where from. There is a little down the front of the block but I've been waiting for a spare day to take the inlet manifold off and determine where it is coming from. Up till recently it wasn't too bad but all of a sudden it has started to get a LOT worse (1 pint of oil per 1000 miles) and yesterday I noticed a puff of blue smoke on starting. The smoke is only on startup and disappears after 5 seconds but definitely enough to view in the passenger wing-mirror. This points at the valve-stem seals (or a seal of somesort) which seams unlikely as the car has only done 80k miles or so.  ???

Anyway, a quick search on here reveals the 01 2.6 v6 has an issue with valve-stem seals. What's my car? Got it in one. So, maybe the idea isn't so far-fetched.  :o

So, I suspect I have 2 issues. A small leak somewhere under the inlet manifold (and previous experience points to cam-covers) which I'll have a look at when I get around to whipping the inlet manifold off. However, the bigger worry for me is the valve-stem seals. I believe you have to have the cams off and the heads off for this. I don't have the tools or experience for this. So, question:

1) Is my diagnosis sounding correct or is there something I'm missing?
2) Assume it is the valve-stems, is there anyone on here who could help me fix them if the correct amount of silver crossed their palm?

Cheers,

J

General Car Chat / Promotion on at Eurocarparts
« on: 28 September 2012, 20:28:11 »

Chaps,

Thought you might be interested in this.

Just seen on another forum that Eurocarparts (no affiliation) are doing a deal. If you buy a can of oil they give you a free filter too. I just went on and bought 10 litres of oil with 2 of the most expensive filters I could find and when I checked out it not only gave me the filters free but also gave me 30% off! Got the lot delivered for £27. Not bad.

The deal runs out on Sunday, I think. You can up to a maximum of 5 filters. Wonder if I should have bought more? Oh well!

All the best,

J

General Discussion Area / Logging in
« on: 22 May 2012, 20:40:06 »

I've noticed if I put my username and password in the box in the top left of the screen I go straight to another screen saying wrong username and password with a big box to put them in again. This time round it always goes in.

However, if I put the e-mail address and password in the top-left screen I get straight in but get a message reminding me to use my username in future!

Anyone else having the same symptoms?

General Discussion Area / Deer strike
« on: 17 May 2012, 19:18:40 »

On my home late last night (almost early morning) a deer decided to run out in front of me. I was travelling about 70 mph at the time and the thump was considerable. Deer didn't go under the car, as far as I can tell. It just vanished. Think it went over the top. Either way, when my step-father hit a deer at 30 mph in his '99 Mondeo it took the bumper, front wing and headlight with it. I thought he'd hit a brick wall. So, when I got home I was expecting the worst. Went out this morning to inspect the damage and I'm staggered. The bumper is cracked, fair enough. The near-side headlamp is a couple of millimetres too low on the inside. A bit of plastic has snapped off from under the near-side headlamp but other than that she looks good. Obviously until I get the bumper off I won't be able to tell if there is any damage behind but there are no fluid leaks.

These cars are built solid! Certainly I'd rather have a crash in one of these than my step-father's old Mondeo!

On the downside it's another job to do in my "free" time.

The part number on the car is 24443645 and it is on 51 plate 2.6 V6 CDX.

Cheers,

J
