Having an aversion for automatics (always been a dark art as far as I'm concerned) I much prefer manual transmission, because at the end of the day it's basic mechanical engineering. With the inclination and enthusiasm, any problems (clutch / bearings etc) can be done in the comfort of one's driveway / workshop, whereas most auto problems require an exchange unit. Anyway, forget the background waffle.......

I came across this on Gumtree -

Forgive my ignorance, but how would a manual transmission car go into limp mode?

Yes if the engine ECU detects an issue that it can support in a 'safe mode' - eg. knock sensor failure.

Ultimately you will only know what is wrong with that car by reading the codes.

Limp can happen on the engine management, in addition to any limp on the automatic transmission ECU (although on most cars, the engine management and auto transmission is the same unit anyway, though not on the Omega).

So sensor issues, or mechanical issues that cause the ECU to not be able to run at peak, thus it instigates limp.
