How long ago was the oil change and is it petrol or diesel?

Hmmm, yes, diesel getting in the oil, if it is indeed a diesel.    Only time will tell if it was a genuine over-fill or not, now that the level has been lowered a bit. In the meantime the crank has been saying "It's frothy man".

They only water down the oil if you don't let them complete the regen. My oil level doesn't increase (much) because I am anal about it.

Most people, not unreasonably, just drive them and expect them to work, of course.

If it was mine it would be having the changed pronto as if Derv contaminated the  oil is fubar

On modern diesels with DPFs, they are even more unsuited to short journeys than older diesels.  "Giving it a good run" occasionally does not suddenly make it suitable.

If the majority of your journeys are less than about 20 miles, then a diesel is the incorrect car.

As Henryd says, if it is caused by diesel dilution, get the oil changed pronto.

At least it has a dipstick, so that when the oil is dumped and fresh put in he will know the level. 
Mine has the dipstick tube but just a plug in the end. I'm going to buy a service dipstick like they use in the garage so as to make it easier for me to change the oil on mine. At the moment I have to change the oil and filter, getting the level close with a measuring jug (as I bulk buy my oil in 20L), warm the engine by going for a short drive, park it level with just ignition on, wait two minutes, stand on one leg whistling Dixie, before it finally appears on the graphic display.

I found a document on my car for how to (temporarily) get a live reading from the dash gauge, rather than "an average over x minutes" type, which has made oil changes even quicker.  A silly procedure of press this with your finger in your ear, then press the other twice quickly.

Why not just provide a bloody dipstick to fit in the already fitted dipstick tube oil suction tube 


I fill mine to just 1 bar below max, so can easily see if the oil level increases - although my engine is less prone, and my normal usage makes it even less of an issue.  Plus I like to change the oil every 5k or so....   ...or this year, probably just annually

Same here with the intervals of 5K.    I've recoded mine to show this on the display, as default is Long Life 18K or non fixed 9K. Like you, I also like to have it showing clear of the top so I can monitor it. Also like you, I drive fast everywhere, and in sport mode to prompt regular regens. 
Ok, so the last bit was tongue in cheek but you know what I mean. On shorter journeys we use Mrs YZ's Audi petrol pocket rocket.

This was to keep fleet happy, not the turbo's. As I tend to keep my cars for a while, but don't cover that many miles as we alternate vehicles, the time due for an oil change would always be way before the mileage.    So, as you say, the 12 months would apply to me.

My understanding is that the if you have 1000 hire cars in your fleet, and don't have to service them in the year you own them, you save a opps l load of money.
If a manufacturer wants to sell you 1000 cars, they need to  cover the odd one or 2 that might fail because of lack of.of oil change. A couple of engines under warranty is alot less than the profit on 1000 cars (even with a discount)

an update on the oil change. not seen much of my neighbor until today so i asked him how long was it in getting a service & it was two weeks. an overfill by the local garage it seems. they are usually on the ball but the young lad that does the filter change wants a rocket up the bum.
