Cam belt - what else to change while in there?
« on: 01 April 2011, 22:31:02 »

I've got a cambelt change due this summer.

While doing the belt change is there anything else that is a good idea to replace at the same time (in addition to the water pump, that is)?

As for bits, is it worth shopping around for a belt kit & pump? Or is a stealership as good a place to go as any? (Don't 'spose anyone's got part numbers?)

Cheers,
Gaz

I'd stick with genuine kit IMHO!  :y

Not sure where the best place to buy the kit from is at the moment (although I need to find out very soon) but no need to go to the stealers and bend over. Gates or Contitech from the cheapest source available is the way forward. :y

Check the crank sprocket, heard that it can be worn...

Its worth re greasing the auxiliary tensioner pully and as James said, for the sake of £22 replace the aux belt. The Contitech belt kits are good from Eurocar parts or buypartsby ;)

Both Eurocarpart and BuyPartsBy offer a range of alternatives (for the belt kit, the water pump and the aux belt) - even though both sites allow searching by car reg.

How do I ensure I order the right one?

I have had trouble with Buypartsbuy not sending parts on time so I now phone Eurocarparts and tell them how much I can get it for from Buypartsbuy and they get very close to the same price and they'll ask your reg No and give you the correct kit ;)

A big public thanks to James for doing a cracking job on my cambelt last weekend. He sure knows his stuff - spotting at the same time that all my vac pipes were plumbed in wrong and correcting it for me.

The old belt was definitely on it's last legs - the cover being full of belt shreddings!

And thankfully the rain held off right till last knockings!

Well done James, and thanks.
