I've made model kits[Airfix etc] from a very young age,but about 5yrs ago decided to go out of my comfort zone and build a model of H.M.S. Victory out of wood.I'm getting near now to the stage where I have to think about the rigging of it which I figure to take the strain of tightening the lines will need metal fittings.The question is what would be the best type of adhesive to use to "glue" these fittings into the wood?

I'd think 2 part epoxy resin like araldite
if using wire to make hooks etc, you could bind to wood like fishing rod guides and varnish over or paint

Mitrebond would be my choice, basically very strong superglue plus an activation spray. Toolstation and Screwfix both sell it for about £5-7.00

It also means you don't have to hold the components for 20mins while the epoxy goes off.

Thick superglue(gel ideally) and activator. Buy from a specialist supplier that stocks different types(thickness, speed of setting, strength etc) and has the knowledge to advise. This is cheaper and more likely to get what you need than buying a couple of ml of WTFII brand from Poundland.


Activator should be used very sparingly; the glue company rep I dealt with said that one small can of activator to 10 50ml pots of glue was excessively heavy use. Our fitters were averaging 1:2!


Thick superglue is also an excellent filler for styrene models as it goes off within seconds, and sands the same as the plastic. But don't use it near clear parts!

Using HK's finest Thick CA superglue - about 80p for a reasonable sized bottle - I have managed to stick myself to just about everything this morning

I found it melted them, so for that I tend to use UHU Por. Which sadly is expensive, but I don't want my wings falling off my planes when I'm flying them

I'd second that one. I use a pair of 2" diameter steel pins.
