was thinking astra when i saw title, people have suggested astra and having read through still think astra! Had exactly this with my brother, been through a couple of cars, mazda 626, maf £380 new and rocking horse pooh from brakers. Then hg went, scraped that and got an astra! Loads of em in the breakers. So no problem with cheap parts.

ideal first car...? if he has no clue, get a ford fiesta about 10 years old

my parents swear by them, they both have one each that are 10 years old, spent less than £500 to buy them and not had to spend a penny on repairs

Update - FAR less than 4k  ;D

So most likely 1500 tops...

Old diesel astra here we come...

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/VAUXHALL+ASTRA/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146-236,N-12-240-4294966635-4294966969/advert.action?R=200839319789760&distance=19&postcode=CW84BX&channel=CARS&make=VAUXHALL&model=ASTRA&min_pr=&max_pr=1000&max_mileage=
Insurance group 9!?!  :o WTF!?! I had an estate one of those and it wasn't ins group nine, i'd want something with less miles....tho the diesel astras will go on forever, not great to drive by modern standards though.

My current astra 'G'/Mk4 1.7DTi is ins group 4 and so are the 1.6's, much better value.

Something with 4 doors and the 'lowest number on the back' is a bit of a contradiction! It won't won't haul it's own arse around with 4 people! Or if he does want that combo(!) a 1.0 3cyl 4dr corsa.

If he knows sweet f/a about cars you want something as new and reliable as poss, he won't thank you for finding him a rusty nail!

i would suggest an old crapper for a first car, run it for a year and then trade up......

I bought James a clit...yes i know its french, BUT, it is reliable and pretty tidy for a mid 90's car, there is less rust on it than you would get on a comparable astra/fiesta.

Insurace for the 2 of us (he's still not passed his test) is £385 TPFT

Hence Astra G......get them for a grand or so now, reliable, well screwed togethe.....and 100% galvanised
