Maintenance Guides / Bonnet Catch Adjustment - with pics
« on: 24 October 2009, 23:25:42 »
Took some pictures whilst revisiting mine today:
First, remove the plastic cover by the battery as mentioned by Elite Pete - to do this, turn the large screw 1/4 turn, and gently pull the panel off whilst moving it towards the engine (there is a plastic lug at the back, and if you pull it straight up it can snap as it did with me before):

Once the cover is off, you can see the release cable coming around from the wing. The bolt you need to undo is the rusty looking one holding the cable at the bottom left of the picture....

Before you do it, make sure the release lever under the dash is fully home. Carefully loosen the bolt, so that the cable is free (you may need to give it a spray with WD40 or similar if it has never been adjusted before) - it will indeed require an 8mm socket. I would then pull the cable only about 5mm towards the wing of the car, then nip the bolt back up. Check the cable is still operating the release, by pulling the bonnet lever, then shut the bonnet and give it a go. If there is still a lot of travel, open the bonnet again, loosen the bolt again, and move the cable another few mm and repeat. Here is a better picture of the bolt:

When you are happy, fully tighten the bolt and replace the plastic cover, and you are good to go  :y

If your bonnet still doesn't release easily, it may be due to the spring have had a groove worn in it though use and over pulling over the years, causing it to 'hold onto' the bonnet pin,  in which case the following guide to replace the spring may be useful.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Replacing CDR2005
« on: 30 January 2010, 18:18:21 »
Hi all,

Looking to replace my CDR2005 as the sound quality is pretty grim compared to most other stereos I have had... I quite fancy the Blaupunkt New Jersey MP68... I'd like to stick with a double-din form.. wondered if any of you guys know if they are any good (got to be better than the 2005!)
Thanks in advance  :y

G'day all,
Just a quick one - if the weather is dry tomorrow, I'm going to be doing some work on the car, which will likely involve me disconnecting the battery - am I right in saying that to prevent the Powersounder going off, I need to turn on the ignition, turn it off, then disconnect the battery within ten seconds? I've tried doing a search, but can't find it  :(
Thanks all in advance  :y

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Variable Windscreen Wipers
« on: 26 October 2009, 18:07:10 »
Hi all, I was fortunate to have a 2.5CD as a new company car back in 2000. When I had it, I remember it having the variable wiper control on the wiper stalk (a little wheel thing). The only options I specified on that car were the auto box and metallic paint, so I figured it was a standard feature. I now have a 2002 2.6 CD, and it does not have the variable wiper control. My last car had it, and I quite like it - so I guess my questions to you guys & gals are:
1) Were variable wipers standard fitment on a CD in 2000, but not in 2002, or was I just lucky?  :)
2) If I want to retrofit, is it just a case of me getting a new stalk from the scrappies and installing it, or do I have to add or change a relay, or does anything need reprogramming?  :-?
3) If I need a new relay, does anyone know which one?  :y
4) Do any of you have the bits lying about that you'd be willing to part with if I cross your palm with silver?  ;)
Thanks in advance!  :y

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Motorola HF850 Fitted!
« on: 23 August 2009, 19:40:05 »
Hi all,
I managed to get my Motorola HF850 handsfree unit fitted yesterday without too much trouble into my facelift with prewiring. I'm mentioned in other posts that my car had a badly fitted Nokia car kit - imagine my surprise when I removed the footwell cover under the glovebox, and down popped the Nokia HFU-2, only to find that the person who installed it had actually gone to the trouble of buying the autoleads harness for the VFA connector, but was only actually using the mute & sense leads! They had wired the 12v feed to the cigar lighter socket for some reason, and just not bothered connecting the speakers or to the GM microphone!

Just to satisfy my curiosity, I plugged the autoleads harness mic & speaker jacks into the box, and no surprise, they worked perfectly with a 6310 mobile. Still, it made my life installing the HF850 much easier.
The Motorola power connector is different to the Nokia one, so I connected it as follows:

+12v - RED - to RED on harness, VDA pin 11
GND - BLACK - to BLACK on harness, VDA pin 1
IGN - GREEN - to BLUE on harness, VDA pin 10
MUTE - ORANGE, to YELLOW on harness, VDA pin 4

I chopped the jack connectors for mic and speaker off the autoleads harness, and removed the connector from the Motorola speaker. I connected them together as follows:

SPEAKER+ - BLACK - to BLACK on harness, VDA pin 16
SPEAKER- - BLK/WHT to BLK/WHT on harness, VDA pin 7

I then powered up the unit, and tested it with the GM mic insert - no joy, so I decided to run in the Motorola mic.
(Note the connections for the GM mic are 9&14 on the VDA - I have heard that some also have a third wire connected to pin 18)

I removed the GM mic capsule from the courtesy light, and taped up the wire behind - the Motorola mic is a nice snug fit into the gap, and works perfectly:

... ran the wire down the pillar and below the glovebox. I've located the controller in front of the gearbox selector....

... then tidied up the wiring loom

...before attaching the control box (very light) to the back of the footwell panel with velcro.

They are knocking these bluetooth units for £19.99 on eBay now (were £76 not so long ago), and whilst they are not as fully featured as some of the Parrot ones etc, they are pretty good value for money.
By the way, this is what the GM mic insert looks like....

Hope you find this helpful!  :y - sorry if the pics are a little fuzzy - mobile 'phone job.

Hi all,
I've managed to lay my hands on an indicator stalk with the cruise control buttons... does anyone know of a friendly Tech2 bod in South Wales who's palm I could cross with silver to get it activated on my facelift CD? :question

Hi all,
The postman has finally delivered my Motorola Bluetooth kit, and I'm going to have a go at installing it tomorrow - anyone got any hints on removing the glovebox on my facelift - is it pretty straightforward? Cheers.  :)

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Power sounder - number of beeps?
« on: 18 August 2009, 08:51:09 »
Hi all,

My power sounder is occasionally beeping after I remove the ignition key - it only tends to happen in the mornings, after my 15 mile drive to work (and not every day). I've read plenty of great articles on this forum as to problems with the batteries, or water getting in to the sounder under the scuttle plate - my question is, what do the different number of beeps mean? Most often I get 4 beeps, but twice I had 6, and today I only had 3! Are they error codes meaning different things, or is my hearing just playing tricks with me so early in the morning!
Thanks in advance.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Telephone Prewiring
« on: 16 August 2009, 21:15:02 »
Hi all,
I've had my red '02 CD 2.6 V6 for just over a week now and I'm starting to get to grips with it. No major issues, just a couple of little things, but I'll post them elsewhere.
One question I have though - I've got a Motorola HF850 Bluetooth kit (they are now going for as little as £19.95 on eBay) - my wife has been using one for some time now, and they look pretty good. My Omega already has a Nokia car kit, but it has been fitted badly in my opinion - it uses a tax disc aerial, no radio mute, they have drilled the console, and it is powered from the auxiliary power line. Now I know that my Omega is one of the models with telephone prewiring, as it is the right age, has the antenna on the back, and there is the 18 pin VDA connector behind the glovebox. I used to fit PMR equipment to cars back in the days of the Senator, so I'm okay working on car wiring looms - The Motorola connections are subtly different to the Nokia kits, so I'll have to modify an adaptor lead or make up my own. My question is - I've been reading about this extra relay and/or transformer that is required by some models - can anyone tell me if mine would already have that fitted, or would I need to get one - and if so, where does it go? - the stereo unit is the 2005 single slot CD player.
Thanks in advance, Glenn

Omega General Help / Becoming difficult to start....
« on: 06 January 2011, 19:57:07 »
Hi all, not been on for a bit, been off having a baby and moving house  :y
My miggy has been behaving really well over the last few months, however she is sometimes becoming sluggish to start - usually after standing for more than a couple of hours. She does always start, but can take sometimes 5-10 seconds - she's always been a great starter, so really notice it. Sometimes, will start quickly, but others it seems a bit of a struggle. There's plenty of juice in the battery, and always at least 1/4 tank of fuel. No warning lights, and no codes on the pedal trick. Once started, runs fine, no issues at all. Filters all changed (inc. fuel) 12k ago, recent oil change. New 2-4-6 coil pack last year and sealed scuttle, all looks dry in there (symptoms were different then - poor running & eml). I'm going to have a look at the weekend, as I don't want to take it to a garage and have them replace parts until they find the right one at my expense!! >:(
Just wondered if any of you had any pointers or similar experiences - thanks in advance  :y

Omega General Help / Quick A/C Question...
« on: 24 May 2010, 21:40:49 »
Now we are getting some decent weather, I've discovered my aircon is not so great. When I switch ECO off, the compressor kicks in (see it spinning, fans come on and rev counter dips), and the servos behind the dash move the flaps about, but the air coming out is actually hotter than with the A/C off! No cold pipe by the compressor (both warm, but one warmer than the other) - not a great expert with A/C systems, but would I be right in thinking the gas is low (but not low enough to stop the compressor spinning)?
Just don't want to get fleeced by an A/C service :o
Thanks in advance. :y

Omega General Help / Petrol Smell
« on: 30 March 2010, 13:50:28 »
Hi all,

For a while now, I've been getting a very slight petrol smell when I come to a stop, and the engine is just idling. Nothing at all when the car is in motion, just when you come to a stop, even if there are no cars around. Does not seem to be any difference if the blowers are on high or low. Have checked obvious places around fuel pipes etc. and no sign of leakage, no drip marks under the car, seems to happen less on a longer run. Any suggestions? V6 2.6 - Cheers  :y

Omega General Help / Steering Knock
« on: 22 March 2010, 19:04:11 »
Had to get home a bit quick today, so was 'driving it like I stole it'  :) - noticed on three roundabouts, a knocking noise from the o/s/f wheel as I turned the steering quickly from right back to centre. Also felt it through the steering wheel (single knock each time). Weather conditions were very very wet, and despite attempts to replicate it since, it has not come back. Can turn the steering lock-to-lock at standstill, and there is no noise, and there appears to be no play. Similarly, threw it into a couple of roundabouts just now and seems okay. Wishbone front lower bushes were advisory at last MOT, so could they be causing it, or was it just the wet or me being over sensitive :-? - both front tyres 6+mm and recently balanced.
Any ideas gratefully received - cheers  :y

Omega General Help / My car thinks it's 68 degrees outside!
« on: 18 February 2010, 16:54:31 »
Hi all,

Just driving home from work this evening, got the customary flashing waring of 0.5 degrees outside on the mid... however, on the way home, it started reading 68 degrees! Varies up and down a couple of degrees, but of course, the climate control thinks its hot outside, so have to crank that up to keep warm  :(
Engine temperature is normal, car appears to be running okay.
Figure its the outside temperature sensor up the creek - firstly, can anyone tell me where it is on the Omega (and is it easy to change), and secondly, does it sound like the right symptoms, and thirdly, how much should I be paying?
Thanks in advance! :y

Omega General Help / Wet Plugs - any ideas?
« on: 27 December 2009, 16:49:41 »
Hi all,

I've been following http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1261254022/0#12 on misfiring - I today bit the bullet and went out into the cold to change my 2-4-6 coil pack, as the misfire was getting worse, and the emissions light was on constant (0300 random misfire & 0304 misfire cyl 4)  :'(. I followed the excellent how-to, and only managed to break one of the DBW wiring cover tabs  :y
When I got the pack out, plugs 6 & 4 were very wet, as was the coil pack on those plugs. Plug 2 seemed okay. Removed the plugs (new 2k ago) and give them a good dry. The plug wells and the coil pack boots were wet and covered with rusty water, but there was NO oil and they did not smell of coolant. Cleaned all that out, put the whole lot back together with the new pack, and restarted :y. EML was on for the first four restarts, but now it has gone. Car drives lovely once more, took it for a good run, plenty of power, no misfire, great.
Obviously, I'm worried that this water is going to come back.  :(
Here are the clues I can offer:
Cyl 4 was the wettest, and the coil pack top had cracked and corroded, but there were more water marks on 6 - 2 pretty clean.
Rusty water colour seemed to start at the top of the well under the plenum side, not the lower rocker cover side, however water seemed to have risen right up the boots for 6 & 4
There was no oil in  there, and no smell of coolant
I've not lost any coolant since it was refilled in September - the coil pack had rusty water marks on it when the plugs were changed at that time, but all was bone dry.
I do park the car overnight on a fairly steep downhill slope, and I've had a couple of electrical issues with the alarm recently (going off when I start the car, or powersounder giving the beeps of death)
The 1-3-5 bank is clean and dry
Misfire worse when it was warm
Battery is fine
No other codes recorded.

Anyone got any suggestions on a postcard???

Thanks in advance!  :y
