Maintenance Guides / Bonnet Catch Adjustment - with pics
« on: 24 October 2009, 23:25:42 »
Took some pictures whilst revisiting mine today:
First, remove the plastic cover by the battery as mentioned by Elite Pete - to do this, turn the large screw 1/4 turn, and gently pull the panel off whilst moving it towards the engine (there is a plastic lug at the back, and if you pull it straight up it can snap as it did with me before):

Once the cover is off, you can see the release cable coming around from the wing. The bolt you need to undo is the rusty looking one holding the cable at the bottom left of the picture....

Before you do it, make sure the release lever under the dash is fully home. Carefully loosen the bolt, so that the cable is free (you may need to give it a spray with WD40 or similar if it has never been adjusted before) - it will indeed require an 8mm socket. I would then pull the cable only about 5mm towards the wing of the car, then nip the bolt back up. Check the cable is still operating the release, by pulling the bonnet lever, then shut the bonnet and give it a go. If there is still a lot of travel, open the bonnet again, loosen the bolt again, and move the cable another few mm and repeat. Here is a better picture of the bolt:

When you are happy, fully tighten the bolt and replace the plastic cover, and you are good to go  :y

If your bonnet still doesn't release easily, it may be due to the spring have had a groove worn in it though use and over pulling over the years, causing it to 'hold onto' the bonnet pin,  in which case the following guide to replace the spring may be useful.

Mine has been doing this for the last year or so - only tends to be on acceleration, 2-4000 region, usually after cold start. Does not seem to be related to any other issue, so have just left it until I need to get to the instruments for other reasons  :y

Yes, had it every day with mine, offside rear corner seems to be a blindspot... just approach it from the other side now  :y

Four beeps again so I removed the power sounder an hour or so ago.  I started the engine shortly before the final disconection and it didn't even make a peep.

I sawed around the case join as per the guide and disconnected the siren part within about 20 minutes, so no chance of noise now.  The batteries are Varta 3/V150H as shown in the guide, which seem to be easily available on the web and at Maplins, albeit with different tags.  But my subscription to Bodgers' Weekly is up to date so I will work something out.   ;)

I'm a little puzzled that the batteries look perfect with no sign of leakage, and they each gave 4.12V initially, which seemed quite healthy.  This has dropped to 4.10 over the past hour.

My batteries looked okay physically, and they tested out on the meter okay, but once I changed them, the dreaded beeps stopped. No problem fitting the newer batteries with three instead of four pins, as you can get the holes to line up. Just remember to seal it all back up real good  :y

Mine sometimes does not flash the lights the second time, but I can still hear the motors deadlocking  :y

Another option is the Mac mini - I have a mate who's fitted it in his Spitfire - they are really tiny, and can be controlled from a mac remote or an ipod touch / iphone.... you've then got full iTunes etc. He's then got a small screen about 7" on the tunnel.
You don't have to run OSX either (unless your an Apple geek like me!) - they will run XP, Vista etc. using the Bootcamp utililty provided.
Costly, but works well  :y
Surely thats not a plus point :o
Well, I guess you either love it or hate it.... I've been using iTunes for many years, and like it - but I can understand why many people don't  :y

Have a look at this... I found it helpful....

I know he's basing it on the 2003 Zafira, but the VDE wiring is the same.... it may be of assistance - it certainly helped me!  :y

If you replace 4 pin with 3 pin what connections are soldered
You just solder the single pin in to the closest one of the two vacant holes - they are joined by a track on the PCB anyway :y
The single pin is on the -ve side of the battery, so just fit the replacements the same way round... IIRC, the polarity is marked on the circuit board too  :y

I've read somewhere on here that people have had trouble with a connector it uses which is located behind the front bumper on the nearside, by the foglight... I'm sure someone will come along and confirm in a bit  :y

My fans are working OK but even on max heat the air is only luke warm. The temp reading on the dash is about 20 degrees above actual temperature. Is this coincidence or are the 2 connected? Car is a 98 MV6.
I think I read somewhere that the climate system uses the outside temperature somehow.

A faulty outside temperature sensor could therefore confuse the climate system. (not sure if this applies to mini-facelift as well as facelift).

I think the outside sensors are cheap & easy to replace so it would make sense to change that first before pulling the heating & cooling systems apart.

Just posted a similar thread... my dash is saying 68 degrees, and the heater is blowing cold air... the climate control does rely on the outside temperature sensor. £3.85 from AutoVaux.... :y

Glad you got the Renault sorted   :y

Speakers? depends on budget

Clarions are excellent value around the £50~£65 mark

And if you want some £150+ then look to Focal

 :y

Clairons sound about right :y Thanks again! :y
