Well guys I have owned the Omega now for 6 years now and it is still going strong. It has had all the usual problems but with the help of this forum they have been resolved. Without doubt this forum is the best I have used. Quality info from a great community and well presented. I bought the car because it was cheap and luxurious and the drive is very good. The only real fault is the economy. So to the difficult question which can't be put off much longer. Where next? They aren't getting any younger and the prices are rock bottom. I want something with luxury that is cheap, not so old and with good forum back up. I have thought of an Elite Insignia. What do forum members plan to move on to? Your thoughts are welcomed

Sadly I wouldn't bother with anything 'similar' from Vauxhall. Insignias don't do (for me) anything that the Omega doesn't. When my old girl becomes the 'weekend' or 'second' car, we'll be getting a coupe, or something wholly un-Omega-like. The only true Omega replacement choice from Luton is the VXR8, but as they're only sold in the UK as leery track machines, this may not be what you're looking for.
If I were to stick with the nice saloon idea, for not-too much money, maybe an XF, or Volvo. Skoda Superb, perhaps. Thereabouts. :)

Vxr8 built in Australia, and isn't leery till you abuse the right pedal.
The Volvo and Skoda are wwd.
And the xf is Dutch, and assembled in Preston. ;) and a bit large for most driveways

For a large, luxurious and cheap saloon there is only one real alternative: 400 series Lexus. Early ones are contemporaries of Omegas(but are easier to find) and are still in production. One big thing in their favour is that they are badge-engineered Toyotas, with all that entails for reliability, durability and ease of maintenance.
If I had to replace my estate now, I 'd search for another as they're not hard to find. In another 2 or 3 years, that won't be the case and I'll switch to a Volvo - which was also the alternative when I bought this car 5 years ago.

sigh. When I said 'from Luton' I didn't mean 'built in Luton' I meant 'from Luton aka Griffin House aka the Vauxhall Stable'

LS460 is certainly an extremely nice motor... on the "possibles" list for me .. :)

LS460 is certainly an extremely nice motor... on the "possibles" list for me .. :)

Some say they look ugly......or worse still bland. I prefer the word discreet. :y

How about the Lexus LS600h?
I believe this luxurious means of transport comes with 2 engines.
A 5 litre V8 at the front........... and a milk float engine in the boot to aid economy. ::) ::) :)

I know the W220 disolves like an unpainted Lancia on a beach, but there are some nice six cylinder ones knocking about...
The Cadillac is clearly an alternative choice, being wwd and otherwise unknown, but there we are ::)

Volvo S80, nice interior, all the toys, economical especially in D5 form, fast and comfortable, good forum, cheap and getting cheaper thanks to replacement S90!

Was having a beer (or three) with fellow caravanners last night, this subject arose ... so now have to remove the Lexus 460 from the "possibles" list ... seems it is NOT, and never will be, cleared for towing !!
Phaeton would still be high up the list IF, big IF, they were not all oil-burners ... seems the petrol option died around 2005 and from then on its all oil .... and I want petrol/lpg .. :(

Also, AFAIK, the LS 460 & 600h are direct injection petrol and no-one has yet done an lpg kit for them. :(

Contemplating what would replace the Bullet on the way in to work today. Drew a big fat blank. Nothing. Zilch.
I have this nagging worry I could end up in a WWD shitbox. And that concerns me.

As an outside bet.If you're not squeamish about such things what about an ex-hearse?By their nature they're generally well maintained/looked after and if you get one with the higher than standard rear roofline you'd have more than ample space with or without the "load bed" in place.This would leave the field fairly open as to make/model.

That's what I went for in the end bought a cheap one to see how I got on with it so far so good bought a 2001 3.0 se sport with histpry for £600 complete with private plate s-tpe

I replaced my elite with a w220 about 3 years ago. It is a 2005 and had 48000 miles on the clock and cost £6500. It is better on fuel than the omega even though it is a 3.7 v6. Only problem has been parking sensors touch wood. It is great to drive but you can't fit a tow bar to it either.
