We're up in N Yorkshire for a week away. I decided to take the wife's grandland because we can fit everything, including doggie, in one car. Coming back from Pickering towards Kirkbymoorside on the A170, 60mph limit, some old bastard pulled out about 200 yds in front of me in a Chinese MG and decided 40mph was plenty. There was plenty of room (thank fùck) so put my foot down and pulled out. Auto box dropped from 7th to 6th and off we went. Nothing, eff all. I was waiting for the kick I get from my 1.6 astra but it never came. We got past quite easily but I'm glad I did that on a clear road with nothing coming in the opposite direction. I might have come cropper with less time to overtake.
1.5 diesel in a big car......no.

At 40 MPH it should kickdown to 2nd or 3rd.
Does it have a sport mode for more response?

;D ;D ;D
I probably didn't kick down hard enough, not used to the car, but it's still very slow.

Even if, like my Signum, there is no sport button, it should kickdown far more gears at that speed.
7th to 6th does not seem right.....so little wonder it struggled. :)

It's a heavy car, with 128bhp, what can I say ?
Correction, 118bhp.

Time for a change. ::)
A paltry 118BHP in something that weighs the same as an old steam train is never going to rip your face off. Did you not notice this lack of urge when you had the test drive? :)

Not my car. She only does town driving, so it will do.
-
Back in the day 118BHP was a respectable amount of power for a 'sporting saloon car'
When cars were not fat bastards and car owners were not fat bastards. 8)

My astra (K) is very light compared to the J. It manages to pick up its skirts quite nicely on only 136bhp.
-
And I grumble about the pathetic 163bhp (allegedly) in hers ;D

Why the hell do manufacturers put puny engines into bigger and bigger cars? Ford stick a 1 litre engine in a Mundano for gods sake. ::)

1 litre is not even a decent bike engine. My FJ1200 had an extra 200cc. :)

50mpg in the grandland, if driven sensibly :y
A lot of these modern diesels seem to have a 1.5L engine, don't know if it's the same derivative.
-
TBH, at my age and with my driving style these days, I would have one. Very roomy and, although the engine isn't very pokey, it's quiet and smooth. Unfortunately, the tech that comes with them is a bit 'nannying'.

Isn't that the Ecoboom? :y

All done to please the greens and get low emmissions rating
In the real world it is constantly being thrashed to an inch of its life to get anywhere
Then, after 60k miles, it neds a new engine
The focus 1.0 lasts 10k more before expiring

Planned to take MrsT’s Zafia Tourer to Wales to visit the in-laws this Easter, washed the car, vacuumed it, loaded the it, luggage kids etc. Go to start it, hummmm a miss-fire. If cleared on a restart, but decided not to risk it. First time it’s given us an issue.
Not to bother, unload and all piled in my BMW 435i, we could all fit which was great. Vindicated my choice to go for this over a m235i 2 door I was considering.
Had a much nicer drive, normally have little to no power in the 1.4T. But 3.0 in the beemer and 300+ horses, yes please!
That said the Zafira is well suited to the school run. (With that power) Which is where it may stay.
Might have to use the BMW more often for the Welsh runs :D
-
Will add, there is one junction off the A303 which has short slip and it’s a long climb.
The Zafira would barely make progress up it, although it’s enough. 300 horses though and a full car, powered up it no sweat. (While making a great sound)
Do need a good bit of power sometimes.

Would imagine that the fuel bill was a tad higher. ;)

Do need a good bit of power sometimes ALWAYS.
Fixed that for you, student ;D
I know the Zafira is a better load lugger, but a decent sized saloon is needed on longer runs. And, in fairness, I bet there is little difference in economy on that run, as the silly little 1.4 with its pathetic little turbo is a bit of a gas guzzler when pushed and dragging a full car along.

Actually, no! One of the reasons I sourced an N55 power plant. Mixed A roads, plenty of “lane 3” motorway speeds. Averaged 36mpg on arrival.
Not bad for a 3.0 petrol.
Did a run to Durham last year. My average speed was 68mph over 4 hours which included a stop off in a town. 38mpg. :D

Yeah about the same high 30’s average suspect I could have nudged near 40 being sensible.

Averaging 70mph. What happened to the laid back useless student of yesteryear ;D

When 2/3 of the passengers are young children, who wouldn't take every opportunity to decrease the journey time?

No point going slow when you get this kind of economy at high speed cruising. :D

Just read an article about Vauxhall resurrecting the Frontera for 2024 petrol & EV versions more rugged appearance than the Grandland & slightly larger.

It's to replace the Crossland, so a smaller car based on the Citroen eC3 platform.

Oh god more French crap-----
-
Definitely going to be a pile of shit then.

Vauxhalls have been a pile of shit for years. Euro shit boxes to be precise, but they do the job and are reasonably well specced.
