When set for auto 20c for example, does the system disengage the aircon clutch as need by the system? I always though if you had any setting bar eco, the clutch was engaged all the time?

AFAIK, Auto means AC Compressor on, Eco turns it off. Assuming all is working as it should.

On the auto setting the clutch should kick in and out when the sensor detects its reached it desired temp, is the little grill above the display free of dust/ silicon spay?

As far as I can see it is clean. I’ve never run the car in auto, only low. Will update once I’ve set it too 18c😀

I don't believe the Omega disengages unless ECO is selected, there is a fault, or temp below 4C.

TBH you will know if it disengages because of the click it makes and the revs will reduce.
It will disengage if you mash your foot to the floor, thst is a definate

In AUTO mode the air con is permanently active*. If the air gets too cold the heater matrix is used to warm it up to the set temperature after the evaporator.
*- there is folklore that the air con is disabled below a certain ambient temperature to prevent icing. Mine certainly still kicks in in sub-zero temperatures, however.

Certainly my MFL MV6 and TBE (late FL Elite) turn off A/C* at approx. 4C. You know when it happens, particularly on a cold, damp November day, as the bloody thing steams up a bit all of a sudden. I didn't really own my other Omegas to long enough to notice on them...
* Of course, it could be on both cars something else breaks at around 4C ;D

Page 126 of the Oct 2002 Glovebox manual. Probably other FL ones the same. Not got a PFL/MFL electronic copy to check, but got a paper MFL one in the garage.
Its says below 5C. I think its a shade lower, IME.
