General Car Chat / accident advice
« on: 27 December 2011, 18:48:08 »
Coming back.from the north today a had a very minor coming together with the rear bumper of someone's car.  So minor in fact I literally just kissed the bumper there was no visible damage.  We exchanged details anyway and as it was the dark decided to reassess in the light of day.  Should I still inform the insurance company?  What do you think?

General Discussion Area / OOF Delivery Network - Urgent
« on: 23 December 2011, 11:08:02 »
Is anyone in or going by the Brighton area today and able to pick something up for me?  Likely to be small/medium parcel sized and needs to come to Aldershot/Farnborough area.

A friend has had her child's Christmas present delivered to the wrong address and if I can get it to me I can deliver it tonight as I am traveling near to where she lives now.

I am getting round to sorting the trailer which carries my mistress Jenny and I have acquired an axle which is 33cm too wide.

Now my question is this, do I:

a) Chop and weld with a slightly larger sleeve that goes over the original

b) Weld plates onto existing trailer frame on to which I bolt the axle.

I will post some pics tomorrow to help but thoughts would be appreciated  :y

General Car Chat / Never ever buy a rather french car!
« on: 21 December 2011, 12:12:41 »
This is the advice I gave to my neighbour which was duly ignored.  Sure enough it failed it's MOT on rear brakes which have caused me no end of trouble to sort out, hence the many posts about it on here.

End result was the adjusters, being made of swiss cheese, had failed so I got replacements at Peugeot and new shoes because the ajuster on there was buggered and you cant get it individually.  Once back together it was working great until the 1 month old cylinder procured at Eurocarparts decided to explode!

Much cursing and kicking of cars (with the proper foot protection) later it went back through it's MOT earlier today with a clean bill of health.  Fair dos to ECP for replacing it without hesitation but still that's the 3rd item I have had to take back to them over the last 3 years or about 40%  :o

Yet they slag off Camberley Autofactors everytime I am in there, not had an issue with their parts yet plus they give trade price to HM Forces :y

General Discussion Area / Some good news at last
« on: 13 December 2011, 20:38:13 »
Well after a few years of disapointing reports which I put down in part to an undiagnosed illness I got my mid year report this afternoon and it was very positive, there's even talk of being recommended for promotion...!  Finally I could outrank Zok!  I have been working hard and even though the boss could not identify any negatives, I know where I could do better in the next 6 months.

...plus yesterday I was told that after last week being taken off the list of people going away next year (which really upset me) I am now back on the list so I am made up!

2 very good bits of news just before Xmas!  This time next year I'll have everything to play for ;)

It's a shame I'm on call and cant have a wee dram of the scotish firewater I got myself for Xmas.

General Car Chat / Advice needed - Drum brakes
« on: 12 December 2011, 13:43:39 »
I have decided I hate drum brakes, but that doesn't help that my neighbour's car has one that doesn't work properly.

It has a self adjuster which operates correctly when the foot brake is pressed.  It should then hold that setting and keep moving tighter as the shoe wears out.  However when you apply the handbrake it forces the setting to zero resulting in that side not being effecient enough for the MOT.  From what I can tell the arm which the handbrake cable pulls on exerts pressure on the adjustment arm on the other shoe, a sort of cross member held in with return springs.

I dont have much experience of these things but does anyone here know what I can do other than file down the crossmember to reduce the pressure on the adjustment arm?

General Car Chat / Pug 106 front caliper Q
« on: 10 December 2011, 12:31:43 »
The neighbour's 106 had a front brake imbalance (26%) on the MOT causing a fail.  THe disks and pads are in good nick and when I had a go myself I managed to lock up both fronts with ease (No ABS)

I whipped the pads out and the gaitors on the pistons are shot to F%$&.  They dont seem to be causing any problem though.  I have had a look on the net but cant seem to find a refurbishment kit and as they arent leaking it would be a shame to have to get new calipers.

Anyone know of a source?

Also besides what I have checked and the brake fluid which I am replacing fully what else could cause the imbalance?

Listening to the detailled weather analysis on Radio 4 before lunch they were talking about rain falling across the North of England and parts of Scotland washing away the salt and grit laid-down before rapidly freezing this evening.  Thoughts are the freeze could coincide with rush hour so be jolly careful out there peeps :y

General Discussion Area / cooking with asafoetida
« on: 06 December 2011, 13:43:28 »
As I cannot eat garlic yet love the stuff I am in the process of experiementing with different foods and an internet search came up with this little gem - asafoetida.  It's a middle-eastern spice and I have lots of information I have gleaned off the web but I dont know anybody who has used it in real cooking to give their view on it.

Anyone?  :y

General Discussion Area / Lucky escape - gas hob
« on: 27 November 2011, 13:53:05 »
I have been sterilising some bottles ready to finish my latest brew and just stepped out of the kitchen when I heard a loud bang followed by shattering.  I went back in and found glass everywhere!  Worried I had done something wrong and blown up the bottles I made my way through the mess to find that the glass lid on my gas hob had exploded.

I double checked and I had switched off all the gas from using it earlier.  Nothing had fallen on to it.  The only thing I can think of is the spring mechanism having failed and thrown the lid up against the wall as the bracket for the lid will no longer come down without a lot of pressure against the springs.

There is glass everywhere and it looks like a small bomb went off.  Thank break I wasn't in there at the time!

General Discussion Area / So, who upset the General then?
« on: 19 November 2011, 20:23:15 »
He's driving around in his tank blowing up everything he sees.  Not a pretty sight.  Something about going to Brackley and walloping somebody like 'e did them to them spikey helmeted europeans'

I think I saw some pink croc-like items flying over the fence too but I could not be 100% sure.....

General Discussion Area / one grows more graceful with age
« on: 18 November 2011, 15:13:57 »
Or not.

Just been driving through my local town near Tue centre.  It's a 30 limit but you'd be a fool to do that speed due to the crossings and parked cars.  From the left a car pulls out.  No indication.  I had to slam on the brakes and the tc engaged, at 20 ish.  I pipped the horn while braking and I saw the driver, an elderly gent it appeared get rather animated.  I had a chance to pull nearly alongside and I opened my window.

calmly I asked:

Did you not think to look or indicate mate

"opps off! I was indicating." (lets forget the rules of the road about pulling out into traffic for a minute)

"It must be broken then mate, just to let you know."

Even louder: "opps off!"

I drove off as he shouted 'wnaker' so loud I could hear it through the car 15m away.  This was in the high street with young children present.

No wonder the youth think its ok to behave poorly.

General Car Chat / Oil leak - diagnosis
« on: 12 November 2011, 23:31:43 »
A follow-on from this:

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=95559.0

I managed to fix my oil leak today.  After stripping down the front end, cleaning the sump and gettting her up on the ramp I found the leak.  Can you guess what it was that was causing the leak?

(Those who were present are barred from taking part) :y

The winner gets a half eaten jelly baby that I found between the passenger seat and center console. ;D
