If you look at the bulk head on the divers side you should be able to spot the two main coolant pipes that feed the heater matrix.

Around these is a rubber section and inbetween the two hoses is a hole into which the vac pipe for the bypass vave is inserted.....if I get a couple of minutes I ill take of pic of this area in my (currently) stripped out one.

Ok, heres a pic:

The top hose has been removed for clarity (quick release connectors so easy enough), the small vac hose at the top left is the vac feed to the cabin (to operate the vac motors on the heater flaps etc), the additional hose is the feed to the heater bypass valve.

Its worth puttinga bit of washing up liquid on the vac pies to aid insertion into the rubber grommits.

Right,

hello there everybody, hope you all had a good christmas.

i have managed to replace the crank sensor on the car and at the same time connected the vacuum pipe to the top of the heater valve.

the car now runs and drives beautifully, but the heater is still not working, just blowing through cold.

at one point yesterday it blew through hot for ABOUT 10 SECONDS AND then just went cold again.

please advise on waht this could be

thankyou again for all your help

As per Marks photo above, do you have the vac hose that goes through bulkhead?

right,

one hose goes accross the engine bay and connects to a piece below the windscreen wipers on the passenger side.
the second one now connects to the heater valve only.

Had a similar problem, only had hot air when travelling, if I stopped or turned the fan speed up passed No1, the air went cold very quickly.

Sorted it by replacing the auxilliary water pump (under the expansion tank).

As I had a spare I just replaced it. But on inspection it was only full of crud, which stopped the impeller turning. Impeller is not connected to the motor shaft, it runs via a magnet which is rotating in reaction to the  motor rotor. (or something like that)

It can be serviced, undo the 4 cross head screws, pull off the the pump cover with the inlet/outlet pipes connect to. (orange seal situated under)

spin the impeller, if it turns easily its not the problem, if it's rough or jammed, just pull it out.

Clean the crud out of the bowl and off the magnet and re-assemble

As per the post above, it's under the header tank.

You might not have one, I don't think they were fitted before 1997. If you do it's mounted on the inner wing just below the header tank and the two pipes going to it are held in a clip fixed to the inner side of the header tank.

Nick, remind us of the symptoms - no hot air?

If so, check the heater pipes entering matrix are hot - its always possible that the new HBV is faulty of that the vacuum pipe from the hbv to its solenoid is not connected right. Air lock in the matrix is possible as well...

Does sound like a vac issue.

Is the 1 way valve on the vac tank (near pollen filter) OK?  Any vac leaks?
