General Car Chat / Ford Sierra overheating
« on: 13 September 2012, 18:47:16 »
Evening all,

My 1993 Sierra 2.0 auto (been in the family for over 12 years) has overheated today. Whilst climbing a hill the gauge went right up-I put the heaters and blowers on but only lukewarm air came out. When i stopped I could hold the top hose with my hand-it didn't burn.

Any ideas?
I'm suspecting the thermostat but any advice greatly appreciated.

General Car Chat / Ford Fiesta drum brakes
« on: 11 August 2012, 13:13:16 »
Morning all,

The wife has a 1.3 Fiesta (1999 T).

Recently when pulling off on a hill the rear brakes seemed to be sticking-there was a slight jolt and a noise when pulling off a hill. Now the handbrake will not hold it on a hill. I'm suspecting worn linings or a leaking cylinder. I haven't played with drum brakes for over 20 years-last car with these was a 2.8i Capri.

Any suggestions before I take it apart would be more than welcome!!

General Discussion Area / Omegas on camp sites
« on: 10 June 2012, 09:53:00 »
Morning all,
Just back from a week in the New Forest with the tin shed. Not one Omega on the site. I remember about 7 years ago counting around 10 on one site we went to.
It makes you wonder what people have replaced them with. I still wish I'd LPG'd the 3.0 estate I had instead of listening to SWMBO and getting her a Fiesta. As much as I like my Rangie-I do still miss the Omega's I had for over 10 years.

General Car Chat / MPG difference between a 3.0 manual and 3.0 auto
« on: 10 October 2011, 16:40:53 »
Hello all,
Still miss my 11 years with an Omega having sold my 3.0 Elite 8 months ago.

Spotted a nice manual 3.0 litre Elite estate but need to convince the other half that it would be cheaper to run than the previous auto that averaged 19mpg over two years.

It generally did around 18-19 stop start around town and up to 30 on a run.

What difference in mpg would a manual make?

Any info very appreciated.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Radio Code
« on: 10 March 2009, 07:28:26 »
I've misplaced the radio code for my 99 Elite. I have the code for the CD changer.
Do Vauxhall hold these codes or can it be de-coded?

many thanks

Omega General Help / Door strap reinforcements
« on: 04 September 2010, 10:57:30 »
Morning all,
Just followed the excellent guide on adding reinforcement strips to the door strap. The existing metal had already ripped off around the existing bolts-on this side there was no warning cracking sound- on the drivers side there was! It took about 45 mins and now appears fine.

Again many thanks

Omega General Help / Door strap problem
« on: 26 August 2010, 16:50:20 »
Just started to have difficulty opening the passenger door on the Omega. The problem seems to be with the strap mechanism inside the door-the mechanism makes a loud knock when trying to open. I've tried oil but no difference and it seems to be getting worse-any ideas/

Omega General Help / Coolant leak-HBV
« on: 15 August 2010, 11:22:17 »
Morning all,
Noticed yesterday that the Omega was smelling of hot coolant when the Mrs arrived home from shopping. Looked at the water level today and down an inch. No noticeable leak, no drips etc.
Took it for a long run this morning and put my hand around the HBV and it was slightly wet - so I'm hoping it's this.
I'll change it tomorrow (HAVE A SPARE IN THE BOOT!).

I changed one previously on my old 2.5 estate (water did really pour from this one!) so am hoping to have no problems.

Omega General Help / Instantaneous consumption.
« on: 03 August 2010, 09:43:55 »
Morning all,

I remember reading a thread  about instantaneous consumption- 0.3 gallons per hour being correct.
Mine shows 0.4 gallons per hour-what causes this?

All the best

Omega General Help / Fluid Leak Passenger Side.
« on: 13 April 2010, 07:37:12 »
Hello all,
Had oil and brake pipes changed two weeks ago.
Have noticed a few patches of oil under car since returning from holiday. Nothing when parked on the level-but only when on a hill.
The drips are coming from around the front passenger side area of the engine-I think dripping from the hole in the tray underneath the engine. Not sure if engine oil or Dextron.
I know the power steering pump is this side-but was wondering if it could be residue of any oil lost when the brake pipes were changed.

I'll keep an eye on it.

Any ideas please?

Omega General Help / Pulling to the left and feathering of tyre
« on: 30 March 2010, 18:35:49 »
Hello all,

Had the Omega mot'd today. Asked mechanic to check for play in steering tie bars etc as when had tracking done tyrecentre said there was play and they couldn't track it. The car is pulling slightly to the left and feathering the inside edge of the drivers tyre.

Mechanic who did the MOT said there was very little play at all-in fact car passed only having to have brake pipes replaced-an advisory last year.

Any ideas-I think I'll take it to another garage to have it tracked.

Omega General Help / Exhaust Studs
« on: 11 February 2010, 07:47:51 »
Hello all,

Am going to change the exhaust on the better halfs Elite estate.  Looking at it the exhaust is joined to the front pipes with studs. More than likely I'll have to cut and drill them out.

Are they relatively easy to drill out?
Will have the car up on car ramps at the front.
Any tips appreciated.

Thanks

Omega General Help / Eternal Exhaust
« on: 29 January 2010, 20:21:59 »
Just had the exhaust delivered for the estate by eternal.
Just a query before I get it fitted, the two centre silencers are different shapes-one is oval-the other wider and more squareish. The numbers on the casings are correct for the estate.
It was too dark to look under the car tonight.

Do they seem ok?
