V6 cats

How do you know when your cats are on there way out ?? My car seems to be down on power sometimes and the exhaust note sounds slightly different as if its slightly struggling then other times can be fine could this be cats or any thing else to do with the exhaust and I have a whiling problem which sounds exhaust area too , it's a 99 estate

check end of tail pipe to see if its spilling its guts out (looks like fibreglass)

Remove a lambda sensor and fit a pressure gauge. (If blocked badly enough, it blows the pipe off anyway, so don't know what the readings should be ;D )

Compare the exit pressure with a hand over the exhaust, with another car the same at a set rpm.

Borescope up the exhaust.

Cats structure of the honeycomb don't usually collapse on omega. Its the efficiency of cleaning gases that's important. 3.0 cats are pretty bomb proof, unless there's a engine management issue where Unburnt fuel is sent down the exhaust.

Blocked exhaust (back or middle boxes) or an engine management problem seem more likely.

Took the car into the local garage yesterday as the whisling was quite bad and there on tick over they had a listeren around the engine bay and then had it up on the ramp and it was really loud by the right hand cat so seems that this could be the cause of the intermintant whistle and slight lack of power  ???
