Omega. Officially back together
« on: 17 October 2013, 22:19:44 »

Finished at about quarter to 9 tonight. But I can happily report the Mig is all back together.

The cambelt cover gave me a few headaches. The aux belt tensioner was tight against it giving me the impression it had perhaps warped when the belt gave up. So swapped it over for a spare I had in the garage. Aux belt tensioner was spinning nicely. Then found out the PAS pulley was tight against the cover  >:( >:( >:( cos I couldn't get the bottom right cover bolt in........ cos the cover I had was for a pre-FL  ::) ::) ::)

So. back to the original cover and it turns out it wasn't warped.... i'd just got the secondary air injection hose bracket (off the alternator) caught up... moved it and the cover fitted nicely.

my next fight was with the aux belt.....again took ages. til I realised it was caught up on the secondary air injection pipe near the PAS pump  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

my next fight was with the secondary air injection pipe itself (can you see a theme here  ::)). had to improvise with some fuel line as I lost the fitting near the PAS pump.

other than that all is good,

before I start her up got to fill up the PAS reservoir as I lost it all for some reason (must have tipped the bottle during strip down) and there are a couple of hose clamps missing. but other than that all good.

martin is kindly popping round Saturday with a battery charger as my battery is down to 11.76v. then we'll see how we did.

Anyway, the reason i'm posting this is to discuss the rebuild in general on the omega.

I think I've realised that ive still got so much to learn. not with the theory... the principles are easy. but mainly with overcoming ohysical problems. like when those lifters got stuck. i'd have been nackered. but martins patience got us through. fairly confident I couldn't have done the B bolt myself. or if I could it would have take ages  ::)
great experience in terms of looking at the omega naked. and good to know I now have fresh seals, gaskets and everything else is new (except cc gaskets).

if it goes bang again ill scrap it and get another one though. hopefully it wont lol

oh and its a good job I decided to go and check the exhaust manifold bolts were tight...... i'd missed one  :o :o :o but theyre all done up and torqued now.

Roll on Saturday  :y

Cough 'followers' cough.

The trick to removal/insertion of the followers is to use a valve grinding stick....the suckers on the end work vey well for that.

Interestingly, I fully stripped a follower the other night so now know how to fully disassemble and clean one.

The V6 is actualy a pretty straight forward engine to do headgaskets on in reality, about a days job all in (even with swapping manifolds etc over and cleaning)

Two were actually rusted in, Mark. And wouldnt budge. i get them out with magnets usually. once they were out i cleaned up all the debris and used fine emery to go around the bore they sit in. and then recleaned. they went in nicely and came out with ease after that..... front one possibly could have used a little more elbow grease but it came out ok.

As for doing it in a day. That would be impossible for me. it's been off the road for one month and a half and ive dne work in the evenings when i can with martins and tb's help. if i was to take a week off and dedicate 9-5 to it i'd guess at about a week.

Well I presumed it was rust. As we sprayed penetrant oil and it began to move the penetrating oil (we used loads) turned brown so assumed rust  :-\

To be fair, its not that bad, just tight on space when removing and installing certain things,k series is easier tho, just 1 head due to lack of the other 2 pistons lol.i would do another v6 again,no webby i dont mean yours if it goes bang, fingers crossed it will be all ok this time :y

Well. it runs beautifully!!!! martin, perhaps you'd post that video for me? :) ps, thanks so much for all your time and effort. I get some dollar next week so expect me at your door with a thank you present or two ;)

the lifters are quiet as anything!!!!

the exhaust pipe to back box has a blow so need new pipe and I need to get a battery hold down as I lost my plate bit. (can anyone recommend an easy battery hold down just to get through a mot?)

check enine lights on with codes for crank, cam and knock sensor. however im thinking they're old codes from the previous explosion. so battery disconnected for a couple of hours to reset those.

very happy. shes gorgeous to drive!!!!

Excellent news mate. Well done. :y
When I took mine for MOT acouple of weeks ago the battery retaining plate was missing altogether ! No idea why tbh. MOT man got a large washer and bent it (sort of z shaped) in the vice, then bolted it in place and it did the job.
If your stuck I will take a pic of it for you and PM it. :y

If the engine light is on you have a current fault code that needs sorting

Interesting: we read the codes via the pedal trick. They suggest knock sensor, cam sensor and crank sensor. Surely these are the stored codes from the timing belt snapping.... cam ad crank cos obviously it didn't have a reference point when the pistons decided to meet the valves... and the knock sensor as at the same time that got destroyed somehow????

TB, do you have your TechII still? if so any chance of me popping over for an ECU interrogation?  :)

Ps, Martin, thanks for posting the vid. Any chance you could put up the vid of the codes?

From memory I make it code 18 (knock sensor), code 94 (Hall Sensor.... presumably crank sensor) and I cant remember the other one  :-\

I think TB's Tech2 was a casualty in the self combusting garage incident  :'(

It is quite common for the cable to one of the knock sensors to get trapped and damaged when the cam cover (or is it the backplate :-\) is refitted.

Some of the sensors share the same design of plug and it is possible to get the wired crossed.

That's ashame. any idea where the nearest techII to me is (im Northampton). if not I can get te Snap-on modus on it when I go to school.

yep I think it got trapped at the same time the cambelt went.

do you think im ok to drive it whilst this light is on? its not flashing and as said the car is running beautifully!

ok thanks mark. so as said, is it not more probable the codes are the stored ones from the previous engine explosion? Especially considering that battery disconnection doesn't remove them?

mark, if you have TechII could I pop over one evening and borrow your services? obviously ill furnish you with Wonga and beverages :)

Good news Webby, glad its back together.

EML on = fault still present. Sorry, looks like my Tech2 was not robust enough for warzone use  :'(

Once the fault code is fixed, would be interesting to see if the economy improves, esp on longer runs.

Thanks TB.  :y :y :y She runs absolutely beautifully.... which is why i'm surprised cam sensor code would be there especially as it starts and runs so well.

oh well...will get the modus on it at school.

out of interest, just say hypothetically speaking I could repair the blow near the backbox with a bandage and or exhaust paste, would it just be an advisory on the mot?

The MIL lamp will pass as long  as emmision limits are met,as for the fog lamp, its not a testable item but will fail if there are sharp edges so duct tape is your friend ;)

My MOTer put a bandage on TBE to get it through the MOT ;)

Then someone nicked the exhaust and used it for nearly a year, until said bandage blew apart on the M4 at 65mph ;D

Must have been heavy traffic. ::)

 ;)

Yeah, heavy traffic  ::)  ;D

Can vary, massive in some cases. Thinks like Carb clearer are £1.50 instead of £7 or whatever a tin.

I just bought some dash bulbs, £1.99 shelf price, £0.45 on trade  :D

Still in progress, had some change of plans which were un-expected. Sellers of house we did want were not playing ball, survey identified big things for us.

Now in process of a new place, we *hope* to be in before Christmas, still in Camberley  :)

As you have trade club access at Vauxhall, I think we maybe seeing a lot of each other  ;D ;D  :y

I used to use the VX dealer in Aldershot for stuff that Andy couldn't post. Not been in there since the trade club changes, but I think that's a Drive franchise too, so not holding out too much hope.

I think I tried the dealer in Camberley once with little success. My dad used to take his Senator(rip) to one in West end / Bisley area who were a fairly large outfit.

That's on the way to MrsT's Sister, so could be useful.

Happy to use aaronjb's at Bracknell Vx (if it's ok with him of course) - As I think it would be good to have an account which is used as much as possible, rather than lots of smaller accounts which could get closed down.

It was right on the A322 there. Not sure if it's still there, which doesn't say much for my skills of observation, because I would have driven past it yesterday. ::)

pscocoa said the Eden Vauxhall dealer off the Frimley Road in Camberley still take trade cards. So worth giving them a try, if not the nearest will be Bracknell. Eden Reading is listed on the tradecard site and I presume it is them in Bracknell that accept them, perhaps Arron can confirm.

Fox Garage on the Camberley industrial estate have not taken trade cards since they lost their Vauxhall franchise, quite a few years ago, the best you will manage there is 10%.

I've just been on the trade side and Drive Vauxhall in Aldershot is still listed. My understanding is that only some of the Drive group that have stopped taking trade cards.

So it looks like we are still quite well served around here.  :y :y

Their own brand are appallingly shite - great for about 3 months, then noisy. The Bosch ones are about £4 more a pair, and last longer.... ....if you don't use them on a frozen screen ::)

Ahh. Was sure I went in there once and got the cold shoulder. Must have spoken to the wrong guy. Are they happy with an ABS membership card?

Actually, I think it was Fox who were in West end / Bisley, so may be out of luck with that one.
