car jack problem

while doing a wee thank you job on my mates pug ,he un screwed the release valve too much and  it lost some fluid , now it wont jack to good
can i refill it safely :question

You really need hyraulic fluid of some description. I have used ordinary engine oil in the past though - different types of oil have different characteristics & you shoul use the correct type.
I can't recommend any cos mine came courtesy of work  ::)

i have one of those jacks, the arm for it is a slot fit if i remember correctly?

I bought a fat new 3 ton jack, with a much bigger lifting plate. It was spring loaded, no little valve thing, much more substantial. I was always nervous jacking up a 2 ton car with those little things.

Maybe time to treat yourself?  :)

We used to use brake fluid for the one at work and we never had any problems with it.

As long as there are no leaks in your jack as brake fluid is very hydroscopic.... trolley jack oil is readily available in most factors :y

The difference between a giraffe and the hydraulic jack is that the giraffe has high 'dangle berries'. ;D ;D Sorry couldn't resist. It's obviously approaching my bedtime.

The biggest concern would be picking an oil that won't degrade the seals IMHO. Engine oil might. I would say brake fluid or ATF would be a safer bet.

Jack oil is probably one of the above, marked up and sold in very small quantities - just like lawn mower oil. ;)

Its normaly an ISO 32 hydraulic fluid....available from any factors or good industrial suppliers.
