General Car Chat / Replacement for SC804
« on: 12 March 2024, 15:50:04 »
I threw out the autochanger on my 1997 Omega 2.5 as it was screwing CDs like mad.
I used a tape cassette converter for a while so that I could use my iPhone to play music. However that has gone wrong and if the cassette unit is in the car will not start.
I would like to replace the radio with a more modern one that I can plug my iPhone straight into.

Can anyone suggest a good (not expensive) one that I can install myself. Preferably one that does not need a cable converter or is simple to convert myself.

Omega General Help / Re: Engine speed sensor location
« on: 14 October 2013, 10:28:59 »
I have used plus gas on it but perhaps it needs a bit longer.

is it safe to use a blowtorch under the car?  I hope I do not have a petrol leak.
But I will give it a try next weekend. I will spray with plus gas every evening until then.

Omega General Help / Engine speed sensor location
« on: 14 October 2013, 09:43:05 »
Hello, can anyone tell me where the engine speed sensor is on a 1997 2.5 petrol automatic.
I am getting a 'no rpm signal'.
Using an analyser on idle the revs vary between 540 and 650 instead of 610. which must mean that it is getting a reading from somewhere ???
I am also getting O2 sensor bank2 low voltage. I tried changing the O2 sensors over the weekend. I managed to change the one on the drivers side but the one on the passengers side will not budge at all.
I've sprayed it with various rust release sprays and even bought an O2 sensor removal tool to no avail.
Any suggestions :'(

Omega General Help / Re: bad idling and accelleration
« on: 08 October 2013, 11:43:31 »
All breathers appear to be OK.
Idle Air Control Valve looks clean. if I disconnect the power to it a loud hissing can be heard.
I have pulled off all HT leads and cleaned them up, but they were not very dirty anyway.

Omega General Help / bad idling and accelleration

Hello, can anyone who has excel look at the following files and, hopefully, give me a clue as why my omega idles badly and hesitates on acceleration for a couple of seconds.

I have changed all rubber 'O' rings on injectors and under the top plenum.
The EGR valve was replaced as it had failed open circuit but it made no difference.
Everything I have tried has made no difference at all.

can someone please help before my wife drives me mad complaining about the amount of time I am spending on trying to fix it. :'(

Omega General Help / Re: unconnected hose

Thanks. Ithought I was going mad as I did not remember disconnecting it and I could not find anywhere to connect it to.
I will just leave it hanging.

Omega General Help / unconnected hose
« on: 05 October 2013, 16:05:42 »
Hello,
I have just replaced all the rubber gromets on the fuel injectors on my 2.5 Omega.
on putting everything back I discovered a hose that does not seem to go anywhere. it is quite a thick walled hose that disappears to the rear of the car.
can anyone suggest where it might go?
only clean responses please.

Omega General Help / Re: Headlight cleaning
« on: 19 August 2013, 22:55:04 »
My headlights were very dull and failed the MOT.
I rubbed them all over with very  fine grade steel wool. This made them worse but got rid of all the crud on them
I then used T-Cut with a cloth which brought them up shining like new.
But you have to be careful with the bodywork.

Omega General Help / Re: Plenum leaking air
« on: 05 August 2013, 10:18:26 »
I replaced the little top hat seal under the ecotech bit as it was misshapen. I also changed the gasket between the EGR valve and the air chamber.
I have checked an rechecked all pipes and connections.
When the engine is idling is tends to hunt at times which causes the car to vibrate.
Acceleration after braking or rapid decelerating is also a bit rough.

Is there a diagnose code reader that will read the codes for the late 1996/early 1997 Omega 2.5?
I have one that reads my 2001 Frontera but it will not read the Omega.

Omega General Help / Re: Plenum leaking air

I have put it all back together and checked everything.
Still a hissing of air. :(
Sprayed the top chamber with cleaner and the hissing noise lessened but only when I sprayed the very top of the chamber!
Sprayed the top air chamber with ignition sealer and the hissing stopped :)
Could I have a leak actually in the chamber itself? ???

Thanks for your replies.
I have checked everything.
The top hat gasket under the eco bit is a bit distorted but is not leaking.
I have tightened the lower inlet manifold bolts about 1/4 turn.
Everything seems to be Tight, not leaking, not split.

The engine has never been taken apart before now so it should be something simple? ???

Omega General Help / Plenum leaking air

Hi, I have an air leak from the plenum on my 1997 2.5 Omega.
I can definitely hear air being sucked in.
If I apply light (very light - one finger) pressure to the top of the plenum the hissing stops.
I replaced the O rings on the Intake manifold but it still hisses when engine running.
Should there be any other gasket that I should check for?

I recently had a problem with my Frontera and borrowed a tech2 reader from a friend. It solved the problems I was having. I tried it on my Omega which had the same diag plug but it would not read anything. It probably needs the earlier Tech1 or Tech1a I have seem mentioned on this forum.

Does anyone know if there is a unit that will do both of my cars as I do not want to buy two units?

What about these PC based ones that are all over Ebay? They all seem to do from 1997 but I purchased my car in February 1997 and must be an earlier version.
