Omega General Help / Re: Coolant Low
« on: 06 November 2006, 14:37:46 »
I got mine from Autovaux.  I cannot remember the part number I am afraid  :-[ but the price was, I think, around £25 - 30.  Vaux wanted nearer £40!  Give them a rin their number is on the website, http://www.autovaux.co.uk/LoadPortal.aspx?tabid=4 - this will take you straight to the "contact us" page.  Don't try and order on line though, the web site is not that good.

Hope this helps and good luck!

I had this problem and can confirm that the only real way of sorting a float switch issue is a new bottle.  It is very easy to replace, it clips in with a metal clip on the side that faces the front wing and there is a lug that is on the bottom of the bottle.  Disconnect the wiring (there is enough slack in the loom) reconnect to the new bottle and then line the lug up on the new bottle and then clip it in.

A new bottle also looks very nice in the engine bay, particularly if you replace the antifreze / coolant mixture with the long life red!

As for when the pollen filter was last changed, I haven't the foggiest (no pun intended  ;D) so I better do that too! Would it do any harm to run without the filter untill I get a new one?

Cheers Jim

Running without the pollen filter will do no harm at all.  It is there to stop pollen entering the cabin - Love the not intended pun above!! ;D

I have found mine to be suprisingly accurate.  My car is a mini facelift CDX.

Omega General Help / Re: Aircon-what to do next

If you don't want to attempt this yourself, and you are CERTAIN that the compressor has gone, take the car to an air con specialist and get a recon compressor fitted.  They are not that expensive (although not cheap either) but certianlly cheaper that buying new.

I have used one of those air con kits, and they are not of much use if you are having the sort of problems you describe.

First of all, the compressor will NOT operate at all if there is insufficient gas in the system - it has a pressure sensor switch which prevents the clutch engaging. So, don't bother trying to bridging low pressure valves etc.

You have no alternative other than to go to a garage (or mobile chappie) with an aircon machine. A gas charge will cost between £50 and £75, depending on where you live. (Down South here, it's towards the upper end of that price scale). The machine will  first discharge the system and create a vacuum. I understand that some machines give a warning if they cannot achieve this due to a system leak. My personal experience is that the warning comes when the machine puts in the gas and the system pressure cannot be maintained. Before you request the charge, make sure that they add dye (should be standard if they know what they're doing). This will show up leaks quite clearly undera UV light source.

You can probably rule out a compressor fault - they normally suffer failed bearings and then with a lot of noise. Discarding that, then, the first and foremost source of your problems is probably a gas leakage. It could be anywhere: the condensor, the receiver/dryer or even, as I have had, a leaking service valve (which does not show up when the machine is charging the system).

You should be aware, though, that AC systems contain both gas and oil (for lubrication). The aircon should be activated at least once a month but ideally should be used pretty much all the time. If it is not used (as yours hasn't) the seals in the system tend to "dry out", causing further leakage faults.

Fingers crossed it's just a minor leak that can be fixed with a 60p "O" ring. For sure, though, you'll never find out until you get it properly gassed.

Let us know how you get on.

Exactly as I said but wirth a bit more meat!  Fully agree with everything said here!

Agree with Taxi Driver has said.  My condensor was shot but this was (I am somewhat ashamed to admit) replaced at Vaux along with a new reciever dryer which I would recommend that you do (have the receiver dryer replaced that is) when you get the condensor done.

Please DO NOT try and short the compressor clutch as this will damage it as there will not be enough gas in it (this is why there is a pressure switch to protect the compressor if the gas in the system is too low) NOR will there be enough of the essential oil for the compressor or seals.  Also, these "top up cans" that are sold are not that good IMO.  I have never used one, but you are supposed to charge the system from the high pressure side and add the correct amount and type of oil at the same time.  How can these cans contain suitable oil for all systems???

Get a pro to look at it - you will save money in the long run and the system will work better.

Cheers jim

Nice one - I will look forward to it!!!

Hope you get your air con sorted

Generally, you will not be able to test the compressor until the system is "gassed up".  I would strongly recommend that a new receiver / dryer is installed and that the "o" rings on the pipes connecting the system to the compressor (pump) are replaced.

There may be companies that can test the compressor out of the system - take a look at the yellow pages or yell.com.

As an aside, can you tell us anything about your Singer Chamoius?  I am somewhat of a Rootes fan these were only available for a short while and there cannot be many left now.  Better answer this in general chat and not here though! ;D

I can confirm that the DVD is excellent and makes a whole host of things become clear - like timing the cams and setting the tension on the tensioners.

Well worth the £3 and the speed of delivery is FAST!!!

All in all highly recommended - you even gets bonus bits like water pump replacement and greasing the aux belt tensioner!

Certinally made the process much clearer for me and I will no doubt do my own belt next time around!

Omega General Help / Re: Warm running Elite
« on: 01 October 2006, 20:01:28 »
When I say mineral, I mean the water you can buy at supermarkets.  I was advised to choose one with a low calcium value as this is what causes the "furring up" of the system.

However, if you have it, rain water is, as you say, best.  It is just that it is hard to collect and keep clean.

What temperature does the fan come in at?

TBH I would say that all is OK - mine also sits at 95 on the motorway or generally running around.  The system is supposed to be pressurised which is why pressure escaped when you loosened the header tank cap.  It is this pressure that stops the water from boiling at 100oC.

As The Boy says, give it a flush a few times.  I did this with my car and noted that whilst it does not seem to run any cooler, it takes longer for the temperature to climb when in stop start traffic etc.

I used mineral water and Vauxhall Red Antifreeze.

Hope this helps.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi,

Just a thought - although I agree with the crank sensor and it proabbly is this very thing, have you checked the fuel pump relay?  I would also check the location of all the other relays in the case by the ECU.

However, no doubt it is the crank sensor.

look on the bright side Mark. When all's said and done, it's about the best oil leak you could get. Just imagine how many much more nasty ones it could have been :)

A good way of looking at it! :)

Nice to hear that the leak is solved - good luck with reconnecting the temp sender connection.
