Apparently the human brain doesn't read the letters, it just reads the word as a whole itself. All that is required is that the first & last letters are in the correct place and we can read it regardless.

With regard to Cleggy's example, it sounds quite feasible that some may not be able to read it due to the fact that it is in Leetspeak as opposed to standard english.
