Just had a card from our local LR dealership inviting to test drive the new Defender, got to have a go but would I spend £30,000+ on one ? No way on earth , only bought odds & sods from them over the last few months must be desperate for sales.

I like the look of the new Defender and starting to see a few about now, so I expect it will be a winner for Land Rover.  :y

I've never been convinced by the Discovery 5 though, and don't see many of those around.  :-\

I haven't seen any " in the flesh" over on the LR forum some new owners say that they're great  & one or two very disappointed due to bits falling off & one broke down after only a couple of hundred miles, I will book a drive & then show interest in the SVR hoping for a drive in one, that's the only other RR I would like but not at the new price 3 or 4 years down the road maybe.

Drove Defenders in various guises when serving, they stood up to everything back then, a bit different now I suspect but like virtually all vehicles you can get good or bad .

I assume here you describe a tarmac test track ... and not a track across the Plain !! 

20mph on some of those rattles your teeth that much speech is impossible, 120mph and bits would be flying off everywhere !!

Maybe Mr DTM was talking about those pop up autobahns that appear from time to time.  :)

I've had various 4x4s since 1987 mainly because of where we've lived and because of the journey to places of work, now I am retired I don't really need one apart from towing the caravan because of its size, but when we change it for a smaller one I'll get shot of the RR but I enjoy driving it.

I didn't mean all 4x4's look silly, I meant the latest, shiny iterations. I'd have a 4x4 if I needed one, but it would be a workhorse, not something that cost a fortune and was never put to work. Trucks come into the same category. A fella who visits over the road has a gold Ford truck thingy, with a crew cab. He lifts the cover at the back, takes the kids pram out, and puts the cover back. What's all that about?

We've got a couple of guys in town who have huge American pick ups ( they sound awesome) but they never appear to carry anything in the back of them , as you say Steve can't see the point.

I believe Gaydon is the Aerodrome where the famous wing spar fatigue was discovered, the aircrew heard an almighty crack and returned to Gaydon, got out of the plane, looked up at the wing and saw daylight!

My mum lived in Kineton as a youngster so seeing Valiant's at low level would have been normal in her childhood, I guess if the Cuban Missile crisis had turned the Cold War hot, Kineton would have ceased to exist having a V bomber base and the CAD either side of it. :o

Aye, my Aunt's farm backs onto the site (on the side where the railway sidings are) and I drive past it two to three times a week en-route to the stables, I just hope they complete the new entrance sooner rather than later as the northbound lane of the B4100 roadworks is shaking my car to bits  ;D

Spent holidays as a sprog to the backdrop of Victors (albeit tankers by then) and Tornados from Marham along with Jaguars from Coltishall all playing tag with the F111s an F15s from Lakenheath and Mildenhall.  8)

Synopsis:
Purchased a brand new defender, took it on a rough track/light offroading, CEL comes on, off it goes to the dealer. Dealer 'fixes' the CEL but also does a software update that bricks a module that controls the cameras, new module required.

They ask for it back to shoot some footage with the car without the onboard cameras while they wait for the module. CEL reappears at the dealer on collection. Dealer can't fix, LR bring in a specialist to address the issue, that can't fix it. Car goes to a 'technical centre', they can't yet fix it and the ECU is keeping schtum about the actual cause of the fault. Total time owned, 24 days. Total time at the dealer 21 days.

I'm glad to see that JLR are really capturing the essence of the brand in the new defender and giving purchasers that authentic LR ownership experience  ;D

Its true for USA, couple of countries don't allow it (Jordan, Egypt and a few other minor places), think at least two full campaigns have been pushed already

We are aware of a few people who make their living by producing blogs and You Tube videos about their 'bad' cars, they must be very unlucky  ;D

I really don't think military vehicles is LR strategy.

Just had a card from our local LR dealership inviting to test drive the new Defender, got to have a go but would I spend £30,000+ on one ? No way on earth , only bought odds & sods from them over the last few months must be desperate for sales.

Same here......as apparently I am a VIP guest.

The invitation usually coincides with the registration change when they have a shed load of 'baby killing' diesels they want to shift. :)

I too get regular letters telling me of never to be repeated offers.  Which surprises me, given my advice to the DP for a suitable location for his stock last time I was in my local JLR dealership.

Got one from Vx yesterday. 0% finance, 12 months insurance, first MOT, 3 years servicing, all free. TBH, that's not a bad package, but I'd have to buy a brand new car to get it, and that will never happen.

Yep.....a £20000 car will probably be worth about half that after 12 months, so your FREE MOT and servicing may prove to be more expensive than you would like.

If there's a remote possibility of hooking you into a finance deal and upselling a load of crap in the process, you could probably stop short of bending him over his desk before they take you of. the mailing list :-X

And you only get the 'free' stuff if you use their finance... Which probably requires a deposit large enough to cover the new car tax and the dealer 'fees/commissions'...

Just wouldn't consider spending anything on car purchases at the moment , we hardly use either of them now ,I put fuel in the RR this morning first time for 5 weeks  £62  that's all ,I was using around £75 a week before I retired, can't see the point in having £20-£30,000 just losing value in the garage.

TBf at least one defender and winch sounds like it's down to the spanner monkeys at their local stealer. And it sounds like the JLR HQ team have been trying to do what they can from afar, but methinks running a YT channel with close to a million subs probably helps grease the wheels.  ::)

Simply put, the longer your YT vid, the exponentially more money you make per view.
