Maintenance Guides / Heater matrix replacement
« on: 03 January 2010, 21:41:48 »
Replacing the Omega heater Matrix.

This is the 'cheats' method that involves cutting some trim, which isnt very noticable, the real method involves removing the dash.

1) Under the bonnet release the inlet and outlet quick release connection’s on the bulk head, also remove the cap from the expansion tank.

2) Inside the car in the driver’s footwell, remove the fuse box lid (the hinge pins are over length and if gripped with pliers they can be drawn towards the steering column, also detach the check strap (mine was broken off)

3) Underneath the dash in the footwell there is a board with various holes in it. It is secured with a couple of quick release fixings ¼ turn remove them and the board.

4) You should now see the heater ducting tube on the far end is a double push in clip, prise the centre section down and then prise the rest of it out (see picture)There should be another one where it fixes to the main section, but mine was missing. Remove the duct.

5) Back to the fuse box. We are only interested in the left hand side of the steering column the one with the OBD socket.

6) Lift the latch on the bottom edge and pull it out a little then remove the screws at the top edge now waggle it and it should come free, gentley pull it out and up-right and secure ( I used a length of wire to secure to the steering wheel)

7) Looking through the hole you will see the harness branch, it has two fixing points (one at 6 o’clock and another at 9) they need to be detached from the dash as you will need to cut in this area.

8) Now cut a hole in the side of the facia large enough to get your hand in see picture. (I used a rotary tool with a flexi drive and a circular cutter) but be careful as there is wiring behind there.

9) Make sure any wire’s are out of harm’s way and start increase the hole size so that the matrix can pass through. Also extend the cut to the left side of the fuse board position.

10) Cut from the fuse board hole straight down.

11) Remove all cut material and you will see plastic box section cut-out enough and remove to allow the matrix out without snagging anything (see picture)

11a) Hints from other people....

It is possible, with patience, to peel the vinyl trim away from the 'underlayers' in the area to be cut.  It does tear pretty easily though; don't know if a bit of warmth from a hairdryer might help it off?
It can then be stuck back after all the work is done, resulting in an almost invisible repair.

Having recently done this I found I did NOT need to cut through the centre console section to expose the fixing bolt for the metal tube blocking the matrix.  It will bend sufficiently to undo fixing bolt - this will be neater once jobs completed!!

12) Blocking the matrix is a metal tube; you will need to cut the centre consul section to expose the fixing bolt.

13) Remove the bolt with M13 socket note it has thread lock on it and appears tight, up the tube a little is a plastic position clip just unlock it from the body and pull the tube towards the rear (see picture)

14) Disconnect the 2 electrical connectors and stow out of harm’s way.

15) Lastly to the matrix it self

16) Remove the T20 screw holding the matrix to the body then remove the T30 screw holding the pipes to the matrix then remove the T20 screw holding the pipe aligning clamp.

17) Ease the pipes forward (There will be coolant loss)

18) Remove and replace the “o” rings on the pipes

19)Gently slide out the matrix, with it out of the way remove the rubber end gasket from the hole and use the new one that came with new matrix.

Could the contents of this post be added to the "How To" guide that covers the procedure for changing the heater matrix please?

It is concerning the O-Rings on the water pipes.

The Vx part number for these is 9194857 but the profiteering so and so's want £3.68 EACH for them! Or you can go to your local plumbers merchant armed with their dimensions and probably get the pair for just a few coppers!

OD = 20mm; ID = 14mm; Thickness = 3mm.

With a bit of luck I have just bought the last two that they'll ever sell!!

« on: 07 September 2008, 20:24:13 »
Yesterday about 3pm I was stuck in central Brum in the worst rain storm ive ever seen. I was trying to get home and the 6 mile journey took over an hour, stop start all the way and I was worried as the temp kept rising and dropping at one point it went over 100,then the alarm siren went off and the taxi infront still wouldnt get out of the way..........then steam and the screen said coolant lack.
The siren is disconnected but I cant find the sight of the water leak but can smell it and there is no hiss from the overflow tank when removeing the cap. So am I right or not.if so how long should take to change ? :'(

General Discussion Area / Opel Antwerp to shut
« on: 18 October 2010, 20:50:48 »

Opel said on Monday afternoon (18 October) that further negotiations over the future of its Antwerp, Belgium, assembly plant had ended and that vehicle assembly would stop at the end of this year.

"After a further meeting with a potential industrial investor, Opel confirms its statement of 4 October, 2010, that negotiations with this category of investors have concluded. There was no investor presenting a positive business case or a positive future for employees or the site," the automaker said in a statement.

"Opel also confirms that vehicle assembly operations in Antwerp will cease at the end of 2010 and that discussions with other categories of investors will intensify."

General Discussion Area / Hybrid with humming device
« on: 24 August 2010, 16:36:50 »
Toyota's Prius hybrid is becoming a little less quiet with a new electronic humming device which is the corporation's answer to complaints that pedestrians cannot hear the top-selling car approaching.

The 12,600 yen (£96) speaker system which fits under the bonnet of the third-generation Prius sets off a whirring sound designed to be about the same noise level as a regular car engine so that it isn't annoying, the Japanese firm said.

It goes on sale on August 30 in Japan, and owners pay extra for installation charges. Its use is voluntary.

Overseas sales plans are still undecided but Toyota is studying regulations and considering offering it in the US and other markets, said spokeswoman Monika Saito.

The petrol-electric hybrid can achieve good fuel economy but is also quiet because it uses an electric motor some of the time. That advantage has drawn complaints that pedestrians, blind people in particular, are at greater risk of being hit by the car, especially at low speeds when the electric motor is more likely to be used to power the vehicle.

The US government's car safety agency found in a research report last year that hybrids are twice as likely to be involved in pedestrian crashes at low speeds compared with cars with conventional engines.

Toyota, which also makes the Lexus luxury brand, said it plans versions of the device for other hybrid models, plug-ins, electric vehicles and fuel-cell vehicles.

An airline pilot wrote that on this particular flight he had hammered

his ship into the runway really hard. The airline had a policy which

required the first officer to stand at the door while the passengers

exited, smile, and give them a "Thanks for flying our airline. He said

that, in light of his bad landing, he had a hard time looking the

passengers in the eye, thinking that someone would have a smart comment.

Finally everyone had gotten off except for a little old lady walking

with a cane. She said, "Sir, do you mind if I ask you a question?"

"Why, no Ma'am," said the pilot. "What is it?" The little old lady said,

"Did we land, or were we shot down?"

GERMANY: Daimler hits sponsorship problem over Brawn GP
14 December 2009 | Source: just-auto.com editorial team

Daimler, which has bought the Brawn GP Formula One team, has run into problems with a major sponsor according to press reports.

German daily Handelsblatt said that the former director of sponsoring at Henkel, which makes Persil wash powder, signed a contract with Brawn to invest EUR90m (USD130m) over three years from March 2010 - but Henkel's management say they know nothing of the deal

Handelsblatt added that for some 18 months the former employee allegedly issued fake outstanding bills worth EUR45m (USD67.5m) using Henkel stationery and sold them to debt recovery firms.

EUR11m (USD16.5m) of that has now disappeared, the newspaper said.

When Daimler bought the Brawn GP team in November and contacted Henkel about the sponsorship deal, the chemicals and cosmetics group realised what was happening and fired its sponsorship chief.

An investigation has been launched by prosecutors in Duesseldof for embezzlement and fraud. Henkel says that the contract is not valid because it was signed without the board's approval, while Daimler's lawyers maintain the former director was authorised to sign such contracts, Handelsblatt said.

GERMANY [updated 17:15GMT]: Germany to bear 50-60% of Opel job cuts; Antwerp future cloudy
25 November 2009 | Source: Graeme Roberts

General Motors Europe interim head Nick Reilly said late on Wednesday that "50 to 60%" of the company's planned 9,000 job cuts at European unit Opel/Vauxhall would occur in Germany. Meanwhile, the future of the Antwerp plant in Belgium is "uncertain".

"In terms of the specific numbers... it's approximately 50% in Germany. That's the suggested number. As I said, we are going to consult, so I'm not giving a final number," Reilly told reporters, according to AFP.

He then added: "I would change that to 50 to 60%."

Reilly said no final decisions had yet been made. The company would soon begin an information-sharing and consultation phase with all stakeholders.

"We must create a sustainable, viable business plan for Opel/Vauxhall. The competition is intense and getting fiercer every day. We have to reduce our costs," Reilly said. "We must fight hard to keep our manufacturing operations in Europe viable."

Opel/Vauxhall has to reduce capacity by around 20%. That could mean a reduction of approximately 9,000 jobs in Europe, he said. Company representatives and unions agreed to form a working group to discuss a future for Antwerp, whose future is "uncertain. We will consider all alternatives," he said.

The company agreed to make no unilateral decisions during the information and consultation period, but Reilly added that the company was aiming for closure of the discussion by years' end - it is in the best interests of the employees and company alike.  "We all have the same objective: To create a viable, sustainable company. This is very do-able. I look forward to further cooperation with employee representatives."

Around 2,300 people work at Antwerp.

Opel had earlier denied a German media report that parent GM planned to cut 5,300 jobs at the plants in Germany, saying that figure was much too high.

According to Reuters, news agency dpa had cited company sources as saying that GM planned to cut 8,700 jobs in Europe, more than 80% of which were in Germany and Belgium.

In Germany, 5,300 jobs would go, most of which at Opel's Ruesselsheim headquarters and in Bochum, dpa said.

In a series of statements, Reilly said all four plants in Germany would remain open though there would be "some voluntary redundancies".

He said Bochum "will play an important role in the European Opel/Vauxhall manufacturing network in the future and will continue to build products for the company.

"I am counting on Kaiserslautern for sure," Reilly said after the meeting there.

An existing plan for the future of the plant, which produces engines and components, which had been discussed previously with employee representatives, would now be the basis for moving forward but would include voluntary job reductions, which could be offered relatively soon, he said.

"The plant in Eisenach is a significant resource for the production of Corsa cars for the long term. If the market situation allows, it is our intention to increase production volume to full capacity by 2012," Reilly said.

The Eisenach, Ruesselsheim, Bochum and Kaiserslautern factories collectively employ 25,000 workers, half the European total.
