Once the strut is dismantled look at the ball bearing race in the top mount (yellow & green plastic rings on most Ive seen)
These can be dismantled if you are carefull and cleaned out and regreased. If there is any pitting to the raceways or rust they should be replaced.
Pitting or 'hammer' marks in the races cause the strut to want to stick in one position which can casus the steering to centre up with a slight off set and a sort of wandering or "tacking" from side to side when tring to steer straight.
