Metallic paint
« on: 23 June 2010, 22:29:35 »

I need to respray a couple of lower rear door panels and a rear wheel arch where the dreaded tin worm has chewed through the paint. The colour is star silver II which obviously has a clear lacquer finish. How can I get the best colour match? I have tried Halfords off the shelf stuff and it is poor.

They, and other motor factors that do paint, should be able to make it up for you to the correct spec, they will have the paint codes...I had some paint made up for a 1960 Ford and it was an excellent match..... :y  not at halfords though.... ::) ::)

Most of the motorfactor stuff is pretty generic ... I think there are about 6 "star silvers" .. probably worth taking the paint code off the VIN plate and going through Vx dealer

Resprayed below the rubbing strips all-round on my previous (now Markseth's), tractor last Summer using Halfords Polar Sea Blue plus laquer top coat.

I got adventurous, and used a textured-finish base coat on the front bumper, then top coat plus laquer.
One year later, and it's still looking great - was even complimented on the finish by a few discerning OOFers at Newent last September!
 :D
I found Halfords aerosols excellent - even though I must've exhausted their stock of Polar Sea Blue within South Wales!

Take your time, and the job's sure to be a good 'un.

Most paint colours will have have 2 or 3 variants of shade, so it is always going to be difficult getting a match from an Aerosol can.

I can remember some old Ford metalics that had over 10 variants of shade, so very difficult to match!

Spookliy I went to VX. Good price and more importantly, in my case, an exact match. Can't tell new from original.

silver is a sod to match no matter who supplies the paint.

Ask any paint sprayer and there tell you the same

The lighter the colour the harder the match, also it depends on if you gave the halfords people the right paint code and if the scrot behind the till mixed the paints right,

Have you tried taking the stuff back to halfrauds and getting a different guy/gal to do it?

how much do halfords charge for a can of there paint anyway? I try my best never to go anywhere near our one.

let me know the cost and size and i'll compare againist GM paint cans, oh the GM paint comes from the same plant that supplies the paint for the production lines

Cheers

I think that they are £5.99 for 300ml. I have had a can of the correct colour made up at my local AE branch for £11, I will try that and let you know how it goes.

Spraying any Metallic paint can cause problems when trying to get a good match, even with a Pro set up two Sprayers can get two different shades.

The problem with metallic paint is the metal flake that the paint contains and how the light hits it, put it on heavy or dry and you can change the shade.

And then you have to put the laquer on top!

There are many tricks used in the trade that can  deceive the human eye.

The mixing of the paint is a science all of its own, when trying to get a perfect match.

Whenever I spray for myself or anyone else, I give the code to the supplier and also the fuel flap.  They put the fuel flap under their gizamy-whos-a-flip and it makes the paint to match.

Now, I understand that metal and plastic fade in different ways, but if the fuel flap 'looks' like the wing, then I'm happy that the paint will be good.

I dont bother with arsehole (will that get filtered) cans.  Cant get a decent, even coat, especially with the lacquer.

Just finished spraying the lower rear door panel with the mixed paint from AE - the match is fantastic! With a decent layer of lacquer to give it the gloss top it looks like it is original.
