Lpg tank temporary removal.
« on: 12 January 2021, 19:25:22 »

The next thing on the list is that the mot tester failed the car on some welding around the o/s/r shock absorber.
He has refused to do the welding with the lpg tank in the boot, which i understand, but also wont remove the tank himself, saying i would have to do it and it should be quite straightforward.
Now the car is stuck at his garage, without an mot, and is 3 miles away.

Is it possible to remove the tank myself, have him do the welding, then replace the tank myself?
It doesnt look that bad but i have no experience with lpg.

I havent used the tank in a long time, but i realise there would be some gas left?

I would really appreciate any thoughts on this as i dont know what is the best bet.

Tell him he's a big Jessie and get it done.

The tank isn't that delicate :D

Joking aside, it all depends how well/poorly the tank was fitted to begin with. And if it is almost ten years old, then you need a new tank anyways.

The valve should keep the contents secure even when removed. (just don't undo the valve from the tank).

Tank is not "difficult" to remove... more "fiddley" and "awkward" ... usually only held in by the 4 bolts holding the frame down, but they are a tad awkward to reach, and the frame only "just" fits so its all a tad tight.

Main problem I had with mine .. it was 3/4 full and a) it's illegal (and dangerous) to simply vent it ... b) makes it bloody heavy !!  Ended up borrowing an emgine hoist to lift it out with ... putting an empty one back in was, comparitively, simple .......  however I had no time constraints and it was on my drive .. not quite the same as you !!

Tank is now removed.
In fact it was fairly straightforward and i wouldn't hesitate to do that job again.
After the welding it will go back in.

Thanks for the advice.
